Ra’as

Ra’as strode into the foyer, with Emilia in tow.

His mother and the kids scrambled in from the family room, as if they had headed for the foyer at the same time.

And they probably had, since they’d been spying.

But Ra’as couldn’t scold them for it. His heart was in his mouth.

The children had never seen him with a woman who wasn’t their mother. He had made a point of not dating. He had no time, and there was no one he cared about more than his kids.

What if they didn’t like him dating Emilia? What if they were jealous over sharing his attention?

Or more likely, what if they were jealous over sharing hers?

“Daddy,” Mimi yelled.

“Let me get changed, angel,” he said, gesturing to what was left of his sodden, muddy clothing. “Then I’m going to give you and Dyrk the biggest hug ever.”

“Like the one you gave Emilia?” Mimi asked.

A strange sound came from behind him.

He turned to see that it was Emilia trying to hold in a giggle, hands over her mouth, eyes dancing.

Dyrk also began to giggle.

“I’m so sorry,” Emilia said, trying harder not to giggle, which only made Dyrk laugh more. “Mrs. Drayven, would you like to stay for dinner. I just need to get cleaned up, and then the kids and I can make a nice meal, if you don’t mind waiting.”

“Oh, I don’t think so,” Ra’as’s mother said quickly.

Ra’as turned to her, his heart breaking. How could she not see how perfect Emilia was for him, for all of them.

“Because,” his mother continued, “the kids and I already decided they’re having a sleepover at my house with Vystian pizza. We’re going to watch that new Jeremy Xaxan holo.”

“Yes, we are going to go have fun, because Grandma said you and Emilia are on a date night,” Mimi crowed joyfully.

Ra’as felt his heart melt with happiness.

“You guys are okay with this?” he asked Mimi.

She nodded hard as her grandmother beamed at her.

“Dyrk?” he said.

The boy just grinned.

“Okay, who doesn’t care about getting muddy?” Emilia asked merrily, throwing her arms wide open.

Both kids flung themselves at her, and his mother followed.

“Dad,” Dyrk yelled. “Come on.”

With wonder in his heart, Ra’as stepped forward and embraced his family.
