“Good luck with that one,” he said, rolling his eyes as if she would agree with the way he had just spoken to the boy. “I’m Pyxx. Are you from the agency?”

“I need to catch up with Dyrk,” she said crisply, pulling herself to her feet and suppressing a groan at the residual ache in her chest. “We’ll see you next week.”

The instructor gaped at her.

“Come on, Mimi,” she said, offering the little girl her hand. “Let’s go find your brother.”

The little girl fixed her with her beautiful, bright-blue eyes.

She must have liked what she saw, because she took Emilia’s hand and they marched off together up the hillside.

Emilia held on tightly to Mimi’s small warm hand, and searched the meadow for her brother’s form.

But all she could see was the entrance to the boxwood labyrinth.

Please don’t let me get us lost in there when her brother is upset.

But Mimi let go of her hand and dashed forward to stroke the howling wolf.

There was a hiss and then the labyrinth slid open to reveal a path that went straight through to the other side.

“Wow,” Emilia said.

“That’s easy mode,” Mimi said wisely, grabbing Emilia’s hand again.

Easy mode.

Emilia wished she could go back and flip a switch like that on this entire day.
