A grouping of copper statues of The Women graced the lawn. Unlike the unfortunate historical statues at Emilia’s school growing up, The Women were polished to a shimmering finish without a drop of graffiti or glob of chewing gum anywhere on their glossy surfaces. Even the birds seemed to be too respectful to deface them.

Groups of students were clumped on the lawn, chatting and laughing or horsing around.

“Okay,” Dyrk said quickly. “I need to go.”

“Sure,” Emilia said. “We’ll see you this afternoon.”

He launched himself out of the gadabout without answering and headed onto the lawn.

Emilia waited to see which group of students he would join.

But Dyrk slumped past them and headed directly into the school. Not one other student so much as acknowledged him.

“Do Dyrk’s friends hang out inside?” she asked Mimi hopefully.

But the little girl only shrugged and stared out the window after her brother.
