“Is that so?” Ayrann asked with a wide smile and a wink that set Emilia at ease. “Well, your daddy told me all about it. He’s really proud of you, and he wanted to make sure we have ingredients in the house so you can cook whatever you want with Emilia.”

“Yay,” Mimi yelled.

Emilia felt a wave of warmth for her strange employer.

“Now I have a question for you,” Ayrann said to Mimi. “Why didn’t you tell me you were such a good cook?”

Mimi giggled.

“Ayrann, is it okay for Mimi to have her snack with you?” Emilia asked. “I need to talk with Mr. Grinks about using a bit of land to plant a garden with the children.”

“Oof, that one,” Ayrann said with a sort of half-grimace. “Good luck, darling.”

Emilia was sorely tempted to ask for advice dealing with the apparently prickly groundskeeper. But she was determined to give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe no one else had given him a fair shake.

“Do you know where I can find him?” she asked instead.

“He’s got a workshop beside the garage,” Ayrann said. “He’s usually tinkering in there.”

Interesting. A gardener would normally be obsessively tinkering in the garden, in Emilia’s experience.

She thanked Ayrann and waved to Mimi before heading back out to the garage.
