“I was, uh, hoping you might meet up with her,” Janice said.

“I can do that,” Emilia told her. “Where does she work? Can you send coordinates?”

Emilia wasn’t thrilled about having her quiet night interrupted, but the urge to help a nanny in trouble was too hard-wired into her to ignore.

“It’s best if you meet somewhere else,” Janice said. “The agency is footing the bill, so don’t freak out. Have you heard of a club called On the Howl?”

“Nope,” Emilia said. “Is it fancy or something?”

“Hm, how to answer that…” Janice pondered. “Wear something nice, but maybe a little sexy.”

“I don’t have anything like that,” Emilia laughed.

“What about your black dress?” Janice asked. “The one you wear with a pink cardigan?”

“Sure, I can wear that outfit,” Emilia said.

“Lose the cardigan,” Janice advised. “And put on some make-up.”

“I have lip gloss,” Emilia said. “And maybe some mascara.”

“Sun gods, how am I supposed to work with this?” Janice asked.

“I hope that’s a rhetorical question, because I’m very much out of my depth,” Emilia laughed.

“Just get as sexy as you can,” Janice said. “You two are going to go out on the town and have a fun, relaxing evening.”

“Do I need to know what’s going wrong for her?” Emilia asked.

“It’s better if she tells you,” Janice said mysteriously.

“Okay,” Emilia said, curiosity piqued by what could possibly have Janice at a loss for words. “Okay, send the coordinates. I’ll do my best to draw her out.”

“Or just distract her for a while,” Janice said. “Either way, we need her talked off the ledge. We already gave her coordinates. You’ll meet her in an hour, so you have about twenty minutes to get on the road.”

“Got it,” Emilia said. “Let me run so I can get ready.”

“Sure,” Janice said. “But I want a raincheck on how it’s going with Mr. Dreamy.”

“He’s my boss,” Emilia said, exasperated.

“I’d like to have him boss me around,” Janice said teasingly.

“Bye, Janice,” Emilia said, sliding out of the call.

She glanced around her room, and remembered that she’d hung her work clothes in the closet. At least she didn’t have to worry that the black dress was wadded up in a drawer.

She grabbed the dress and some underwear and headed into the bathroom for a super quick shower.

Under the pounding heat of the water, it was hard not to think about Ra’as.

The way he looked at her tonight was different from before. There was all the restrained heat of the kiss they had shared last night, but there was something else too, something almost possessive about the expression in his pale blue eyes.

Focus on your job, she reminded herself.

She finished washing up and then dried off and got dressed quickly, sliding a generous amount of gloss onto her lips, and touching her lashes with the mascara wand.

By the time she was finished, the condensation was lifting from the mirror, and she could see herself.
