“Are you choosing that stew because there are bolla-rings on top?” Ra’as asked him. “Because we’re not making deep fried bolla-rings. We’re still staying healthy.”

“I really like that stew,” Dyrk said.

“You know, we do have one thing in the garden we could use for that,” Emilia said thoughtfully.

“We do?” Dyrk asked, looking dubious.

“I was out there earlier, and the beans have sprouted,” Emilia told him. “We could do a topping of spiced cream and bean sprouts for your stew.”

“Yes,” Dyrk said, looking jazzed.

She glanced up at Ra’as.

He was smiling down at her warmly, in a way that made her whole chest feel like it was full of melted chocolate.

“Okay, then, let’s cook,” she said.

The kids gathered up the ingredients and set them on the counter, to be sure they had all they needed.

“So organized,” Ra’as murmured.

“Emilia taught us,” Mimi said.

“Yeah, you don’t want to be in the middle of cooking and realize you’re missing an ingredient,” Dyrk added.

Ra’as nodded, looking impressed. “How about some music?”

He flicked his bracelet and tapped twice.

Suddenly, beautiful classical music filled the kitchen.

“Daddy, can we listen to the Zyxrian Fourth?” Mimi asked.

“I’ve never heard of that movement,” he said. “Which symphony is it?”

“I don’t know,” Mimi said, looking baffled.

Emilia stifled a giggle.

“Do you know that one?” Ra’as asked her.

“Why don’t you program it in and see what you think?” Emilia offered.

He frowned and tapped his bracelet again.

The classical music was gone, replaced by a sick bass line and a man’s voice rapping about peace and freedom.

Ra’as’s eyes went wide.

Then the refrain from the live performance of the Inner Rings Symphony Orchestra kicked in.

“What is this?” Ra’as asked.

“It’s Emilia’s favorite,” Mimi laughed as she danced around the kitchen.

Dyrk smirked and started dancing in place as he chopped the root veg for the stew.

“Doesn’t it make you want to dance, Mr. Drayven?” Emilia asked teasingly, moving to the beat herself.
