“Well,” she began, gathering her courage. “The gardening is more than just a hobby for me. Or at least, I want it to be. I actually went to school for landscape design. I’ve been saving up for the big Sector Groundskeeping Competition…”

She trailed off. It wasn’t an easy thing to tell your boss that your dream wasn’t to work for him forever. She wasn’t sure how he would react. And if she was being honest with herself, she wasn’t sure her own dreams weren’t changing, at least a little, after spending time with this wonderful family.

To her immense relief, Ra’as began to nod his agreement, looking at her with what she was pretty sure was newfound admiration.

“Did Emilia have a good idea?” Mimi asked excitedly.

“Emilia had the best idea,” Ra’as cried, grabbing Emilia, lifting her up and swinging her around in his arms.

She laughed, loving this feeling of being a family with the Drayvens, even if it was only pretend family.

Ra’as placed her gently on the ground and tucked her hair behind her ear fondly.

“We’re going to have to get you a bigger garden, then,” he said.

His pale blue eyes were filled with wonder, and she felt like she could lose herself in them forever.

His comms chimed again, breaking the spell.

“Kids, let’s grab some bean sprouts for the stew,” Emilia suggested, wrenching her gaze from his.

Once again, he ignored the comms.

The kids cheered, and she showed them how to gather the sprouts.

Once they had gathered all they needed, Emilia showed them how to check on the other seedlings.

It was incredibly rewarding to see the children crouched over the soil, their minds and bodies focused on nurturing the tiny plants.

Even Ra’as looked peaceful and content out in the fresh air, watching his kids learn a new skill.

“Ra’as,” a woman’s voice called out. “There you are.”

Emilia looked up to see a buxom blonde dressed in a fashionable suit striding toward them confidently, smiling at Ra’as like he was her long lost lover.

Her heart began to sink.
