“Old York Grille. Come on, I’ll buy you that fancy French toast.”

Her brown eyes lit up. “The kind with Fruity Pebbles on it?”

I pointed at her. “That’s the one. Come on, half pint, let your big bro treat ya.”

She jumped up and hugged me. “You’re the best brother ever!”

I smiled and ruffled her hair. “Your only one.”

Skye went to the bathroom to wash her face, and I plugged in my phone while I waited for her. A slew of text messages popped up all at once. My heart broke at all the ones from Skye. I hated that she thought I had abandoned her. I knew the deep betrayal of coming home and finding the person you loved the most had packed their bags and left you.

“Let’s go!” Skye cheered when she got out of the bathroom.

I smiled at her when she skipped outside.

It didn’t matter if I wanted something more with Gemma. Skye was the most important thing in my life, and she would always come before anyone else. I’d only disappoint Gemma in the end. It was better this way.
