“Can I ask you something?” he asked after a few more minutes had passed.

“Hmm?”

“What’s your history with Harper?”

I laughed. “Oh. That. I was wondering when you would ask.”

He ran a hand across his beard. “Let me guess…first love?”

I nodded. “Bingo.”

“What happened?”

“The usual. She wasn’t ready to be out. She told me we couldn’t hang out anymore because she wasn’t ‘supposed to like women.’ I came out to my dad the next summer. We reconnected this week. I haven’t seen her in years.”

He lifted an eyebrow in surprise. “You seemed so close.”

I shook my head. “That’s the lake. You come up here, and you haven’t seen people for years, but the week you’re here, it’s like you’ve never left. We spent a lot of summers hanging out and chasing boys. I chased girls too.”

“You hoe,” he teased.

I swatted at his thigh. “Don’t slut shame me!”

“Never, sweet thing.”

A car drove up to the cabin, and we both turned to see Keisha and Harper jump out. I waved a hand at them. “Come on over. I got the fire going!”

They walked over to us and took seats opposite us across the ring of the fire.

Felix jumped up. “Beers?”

They both nodded.

“What do you like?” he asked.

“What do you have?” Keisha asked.

Harper put her hands under her chin. “Yeah, sell us on them.”

Felix waved to me. “Come on, marketing director, do your thing.”

“You’re taking the job?” Harper asked.

I nodded. “I think so. I’m still thinking about it.”

“Well, sell those beers to us, girl!” Keisha said.

“Okay, we’ve got four selections for you tonight. We have 611 Ale, that’s a malty yet crisp pale ale. That’s my favorite. Then we got Area 267, that’s your typical hoppy IPA. If you’re looking for a more summer-time beer, we got Radle My Cage. That’s a lemon radler. Traditionally, it’s a beer and lemonade split, but we brew ours with real lemons to give it that citrus taste and be a more traditional beer. Last is our newest beer, Mac Daddy. It’s a traditional hefeweizen with a fruity aroma and clove taste,” I sputtered off.

Felix grinned. “See, she’s good at this.”

“So are you!” I exclaimed. “We do this at the brewery when people don’t know what they want. It’s second nature.”

“I know what you want, sweet thing,” Felix said, but he looked at the other women. “What about you two?”

“Ooh, Radler sounds good,” Keisha said.

“I’ll take Mac Daddy,” Harper said and laughed. “Mostly because I love the name.”
