FELIX

The fire had started to die down, but I didn’t care because, at some point in the night, Gemma ended up in my lap. I held her hip in my hand as she and Harper laughed and reminisced about past summers when they were teens.

It was fun to see Gemma in her element. My heart was yelling at me to listen to it, to let her inside, and I was drunk enough to consider it. I forgot my responsibilities when the pink-haired woman looked at me like I hung all the stars in the night sky for her.

“It’s really beautiful at night in the woods,” Keisha said.

I stared at Gemma’s profile while she laughed in my lap. “Yeah, it is,” I agreed.

“Hey, who did that painting in the living room?” Harper asked.

Gemma beamed. “Isn’t it amazing? That’s all Felix. I didn’t even know he painted and shit when I got here.”

I laughed. “Yes, Gemma, because that’s exactly what it’s like. Paint and shit.”

She stuck her tongue out at me, but I caught her in a quick kiss.

She ended it quickly, probably because we would haven’t stopped if her friends weren’t here. We were both a little tipsy already. Keisha stopped drinking an hour ago, even though Gemma offered to let them stay in one of the other rooms. They didn’t want to impose. I was sure they were just being polite and could smell the pheromones coming off us.

“Do you have a website?” Harper asked. “I’d love to get one for the shop.”

“He does!” Gemma exclaimed.

“You know about my website?” I asked. My website wasn’t under my full name, just simply Jameson Designs.

Gemma nodded. “Babe, I social media stalked you to find it. You gotta put that everywhere!”

“Why’s that?” I asked.

“So we can get you more work. You’re so talented. I can’t wait to see what you do with my logo. I’m totally paying you, you know.”

I shook my head. “No, sweet thing. I’m doing that for you because I want to.”

She shook her head. “Fe, don’t. You deserve to be paid for your work.”

“You’ve already paid me in kisses.”

All three of the women laughed at that.

“So cute!” Harper squealed.

Keisha looked at Harper and then at her watch. “We should get going.”

“No!” Gemma cried.

Harper laughed. “Gemma, it’s late. We gotta get home.”

I let go of Gemma’s hip, and she got up off my lap to say goodbye to her friends. I stood up too and watched with a smile as she gave Harper a big hug. I couldn’t hear what they were saying to each other, but Harper eyed me, so it had to be about me. Keisha walked over to me and shook my hand.

“It was good to meet you, Felix,” she said.

“Likewise.”

She gave me a quick hug. “Be good to Gemma.”

I raised my eyebrow.
