I laughed. “That’s what I was gonna make you!”

He laughed. “It’s my favorite.”

“Mine too!”

He smiled. “Then, let’s make it together.”

I took another sip of my coffee and set it back down. I took a platter out of the cabinet and set it down on the counter. I grabbed the bread from the table and piled slices onto the platter while Felix worked on the egg mixture.

Once he scrambled everything, he gave that to me to dip the bread in and cook while he started cutting up fruit.

“You want bacon, too?” I asked.

“Oh, yeah, that would be great.”

I pulled another pan out, set it on the stove, and got the bacon out of the fridge. I started the bacon first and got it going before I began the French toast. I dipped slices into the egg mixture and cooked them quickly. Felix set out the bowl of fruit and then took over with the bacon.

In no time, we had our breakfast ready, and I had to admit, something about us working together in the kitchen side-by-side made my heart think about how good we were together. How well we fit together. I told my heart to be quiet.

We ate in comfortable silence, eating our food and sipping our coffee. It was a pleasant morning of us enjoying each other’s company.

“What’s the grand plan?” Felix asked as he took our empty plates into the sink and began cleaning up.

“Hike around the lake?” I offered.

He nodded. “Okay, let’s do it. Then what?”

I shrugged. “Get cleaning done and relax before dinner. Where are you taking me?”

“Somewhere nice,” he said with a sly smile.

I squinted at him. “Like where?”

He sighed. “Can’t you just let it be a surprise?”

“Should I dress nice?” I asked.

He thought about it for a moment. “Yeah, that dress you wore the other night would be fine.”

I squinted at him. Men didn’t really understand the need for us to know. I knew that dress looked good on me, but I didn’t know if it was fancy enough.

“Let me get dressed so we can go on that hike,” he said.

“Yay!”

I ignored the laughter that rumbled from him as he walked away. I checked my phone while I waited for him. I was dressed and ready to go, and he was taking his sweet time. I saw another text from Declan. I’d tell him in person the good news. I was still nervous about taking the job, but after thinking about it a lot, I would be foolish not to take it.

A few minutes later, Felix came down the steps, and we left the cabin. We walked down to the dock and along the lake. I adjusted the hat on my head as the sun beat down on us. Felix’s hand swung near mine, and he surprised me by lacing our fingers together.

I turned to him and gave him a smile.

He winked at me and brought my hand up to his mouth and kissed the back of it. I loved when he did it. It was such a sweet gesture, and it made me feel all giddy inside.

“I like it up here,” he said after a few minutes.

“Me too. It’s my favorite place!” I exclaimed.

He smiled. “It shows. You’re all go-go-go. I’m surprised taking this leisurely stroll isn’t too boring for you.”
