ChapterTwenty-Four

FELIX

My phone jolted me awake by vibrating against the bedside table. Gemma stirred on the other side of the bed, where she lay naked after we had another couple of rounds of sex. My girl was insatiable. Warmth spread across my chest that she was my girl. I wasn’t sure how I was going to manage it all, but I needed her in my life.

“Babe?” Gemma moaned sleepily. “Did you set an early alarm?”

The sound of my phone buzzing reminded me of what woke me up. I pressed a kiss to her forehead. “Go back to sleep.”

She turned over and went back to sleep.

I checked my phone, and panic coursed through me when I saw my sister’s name on my phone screen. I jumped out of bed and threw on my boxers before tip-toeing downstairs. I didn’t want to wake Gemma while I spoke to my sister. It was odd she was calling me so early. Teenagers didn’t like to be awake at six a.m.

I pressed my phone to my ear and sat on the couch. “Half pint, what’s wrong?” I asked.

“Felix,” my sister’s pained voice came over the other line.

The panic set in immediately. “What’s wrong?”

“Can you come get me?” she cried.

“Whoa, slow down. What’s going on?”

“Ifelloffmybikeandbrokemylegandithurts,” she rushed out in one breath that I didn’t catch it all.

“Whoa. Slower, Skye.”

She hiccuped, and it broke my heart that I wasn’t there to hug her. “I’m in the hospital in Cape May.”

“WHAT?” I screeched. The gears in my head started turning a mile a minute. My sister was alone in the hospital, and I wasn’t there for her.

“I’m sorry!” she sobbed. “I didn’t want to ruin your vacation.”

“It’s okay. What happened? You want me to come get you today? I’m a few hours away, but I’ll leave right now. Tell me what happened.”

I heard her hiccup some more on the other line. “I fell off my bike and broke my leg. It hurts so much. Sophia’s mom wants to drive us home now, but I just want you.”

“All right, half pint, I’m going to leave right away. Okay?”

“Okay…”

She sounded so defeated, and I wanted to wrap my sister up in a hug and tell her everything would be okay.

“You’ll be okay, half pint. I’ll be there soon. Okay?”

“Okay. Thanks, big bro.”

I hung up with my sister, and all I could think about was getting to her right away. I didn’t stop to think about the woman I loved lying asleep in bed. I rushed around, packed up my stuff in a rush, and left. I didn’t think to leave Gemma a note or to wake her up and tell her what was going on. My mind was on autopilot, and Skye was my primary focus.

My phone died by the time I got down to Cape May, and I thought my charger was at the bottom of my bag. I didn’t have time to look for it; I was too worried about my sister. When I got to the hospital, I rushed inside until I found the Parks sitting in the waiting room. Christine stood up when she saw me. I must have looked frazzled because she put a hand on my chest to stop me.

“She’s fine. It’s just a broken leg.”

“Just a broken leg, Christine?” I snapped at her, and my jaw ticked with anger.

“Calm down,” she said and gave me the ‘stern mom’ look.

I thrust a hand through my hair in frustration. “I wasn’t there for her.”
