ChapterTwenty-Six

FELIX

Iwoke the following day and felt hungover, but I wasn’t. I fell asleep in the middle of the day, and when I checked my phone, I saw it was six a.m. the next morning. All that driving must have made me tired.

I checked my text messages, and my heart dropped into my stomach.

GEMMA: Where are you?

GEMMA: ???

GEMMA: What the fuck!! Where are you?

GEMMA: Fine,go fuck yourself then.

FUCK!

I forgot to tell Gemma what happened with my sister. I meant to call her after I got Skye situated, and then I fell asleep. She must have woken up alone in bed and wondered where I was. She must have thought I cut and ran again.

I sighed and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. I couldn’t believe I was so careless, and didn’t at least leave a note for her. This wasn’t the way I wanted our relationship to start.

It was too early for my sister to be awake, but I slept through dinner. I didn’t know why she didn’t wake me. Or worse, did she skip dinner because she couldn’t get me to wake up? I felt like such a fuckup.

I went downstairs and was surprised to find my sister asleep on the couch. I definitely brought her upstairs last night. I made coffee and wracked my brain about how to fix things with Gemma. I stared at the angry text message and tried to type a response. I didn’t blame her, but I didn’t think she would answer me in a text. I had to go see her. I needed coffee and breakfast first.

I sipped my coffee and made French toast. I was cutting up fruit when Skye hobbled in on her crutches. “Sorry about last night, kiddo,” I said to her. “How did you get downstairs?”

“Carefully,” she muttered.

I put a slice of French toast on the serving plate and put another in the pan. “Why didn’t you wake me?”

“I tried. You swatted me away.”

I grimaced. “Sorry, half pint. All that driving made me tired. What did you do for dinner?”

“I made a frozen pizza. I can take care of myself every once and in a while, you know.”

I finished making the French toast and divided up the slices on plates. I brought them over to the table and sat down across from my sister. She didn’t speak as she ate, and neither did I, lost in thoughts about how to win back Gemma.

I shoveled food into my mouth and stared down at my phone. I clicked through my photos and to the ones of Gemma and me on the lake. She sent me the selfies she made me take with her that day, and I was glad she did, so I could remember how she made me feel. Gemma shone brightly, and her smile was like it was just for me. I felt like such an asshole for fucking it up so quickly.

“You look happy,” my sister said.

I snapped my eyes up and glared at the nosy teenager staring down at my phone. “Nosy!”

She gave me a cute grin. “You love me!”

“Yeah, PITA, I do.”

She tilted her head at me. “So, why do you look so sad today? Like someone peed in your cereal?”

I made a grossed-out expression. “Ew!”

“Fe-fe! What’s wrong?”

I rubbed a hand across my beard. “I was so worried about getting to you, I forgot to tell Gemma where I was going.”

She raised an eyebrow. “Did you text her?”
