I sighed. “I never thought I could have something real with her. Not when I have my sister to worry about.”

Declan rolled his eyes. “No wonder you two martyrs get along. How old’s your sister?”

“Thirteen.”

“She doesn’t need you to sacrifice everything for her,” Declan said. “You can have a life and be a single dad, you know. I’m sure your sister wants that for you.”

I nodded. “She does. I need to make this right with Gemma. She was gonna take the job.”

“She was?” Declan asked.

I nodded.

“Oh, I know,” Nolan said.

“You did?” Declan asked his brother.

Nolan ran a hand through his beard again. “Yeah, one of my buddies called me and said he met our marketing director at his brewery up in the Poconos. Talking about doing guest lines for each other.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Declan asked.

Nolan shrugged. “I figured that was Gemma’s job, and she would handle it.”

“The whole time she was at the cabin, all she thought about was the brewery,” I said. “We toured breweries, and she said it was for research, not fun.”

Declan sighed. “I know. That’s why I changed all the passwords. I wanted her to think about her career.”

I nodded. “She did. I’ll fix this, but I have to get her to talk to me first.”

Nolan nodded. “The Jensen Sisters can be stubborn. Believe me, I know. Gem will need some convincing.”

“Right, this is a misunderstanding,” Declan agreed. “Get Gem to see that.”

I nodded. “I’m sorry about all this. I have to go find her.”

I left the brewery and walked over to Gemma’s apartment a couple of blocks away. I pounded on the door, but she never answered it. Maybe she wasn’t home. I called her a few times, but it rang and rang. I even texted her, too.

ME: Sweet thing, I’m so sorry. Please talk to me.

I ended up going back home after a couple minutes of sitting on the steps of her porch. I only left when her neighbor in the duplex below her walked out on the porch to see what was going on.

When I got home, I saw a text from her.

GEMMA: You didn’t have to lie to me.

ME: Can we talk?

GEMMA: No.

I sighed and went into my room while Skye and Sophia hung out in the living room. I didn’t understand why Gemma wouldn’t see reason. It was one minor mistake, but she wouldn’t even let me apologize. I wasn’t sure how I could make it right if she wouldn’t talk to me.

I sat at my desk and worked on Gemma’s logo. I knew she was going to love this design, even if she hated me and didn’t want to be with me anymore. I finished it up and sent it to her with a note explaining what happened. I hoped she would come around if she knew the truth.
