He chuckled. “Get lost in your thoughts.”

“Oh. I guess so.” I bit my lip. “Feels like I’ve been doing it a lot more lately.”

“What’s on your mind?”

Besides my future? You. The thought came faster than it should have. But I couldn’t say it, so I settled for, “Everything, I guess. You know how the beginning of the semester is.”

“Somehow both severely boring and insanely busy?”

I laughed. “Yes. That.”

He looked down at his watch as if he realized he needed to check the time. “Shoot, Noelle, I’m sorry to cut this short, but I gotta run. It was nice to see you.”

“You too,” I responded, and then gave him a small smile as he headed out of the coffee shop, giving me a little wave before he walked out the door.

And what was my heart doing—or my brain for that matter? I wasn’t going to think about how just talking with him gave me little butterflies.

I rolled my eyes as I went back to my laptop. I needed to stop thinking about him. Jake had backfired on me enough without me getting involved with a professor and ruining my entire reputation at my university, or worse.

So no… I wasn’t going to keep having those thoughts. Absolutely not.
