“Good,” she smirked. “Then no other girls will go near my man.”
“Your man, huh?” I liked the sound of it. I liked it a lot. I tried not to count the freckles on her face as I stared at her, tried not to connect them into constellations across her cheeks. But I didn’t resist the urge to reach out and touch them, trace them, before cupping her cheek. I needed to stop touching her so damn much.
“Yeah, my man. And I’m your girl, aren’t I?”
“The only one,” I confirmed.
“I just wanted to hear you say it again.”
I could feel her smile as she nestled deeper into my arms. We fell asleep like that, cuddled together, arms wrapped around each other, whispering sweet nothings into each other’s ears until our eyes drooped closed and no more words came to us. I fell into a deep, peaceful sleep, one where I had her for always.
I hoped the day would never come when I had to say goodbye to the sweet feisty little redhead who had taken a big piece of my heart.
