Marrs got a callback from Sergeant Harper right away.

“Danni,” he said, “she wants to be on speakerphone, to talk to both of us.”

“Why is it you want to talk to the mayor?” Harper asked.

Danni explained about the photo of the mayor’s son they’d found in the house.

“Are you saying you think the mayor knows Moore?”

“Not at all. But the house was rented to a man with two 10-29 Franks out of New York. He’s a known associate of Moore. Whoever was in that house seems to have an interest in her family. Moore is wanted for questioning in Thomas Johnston’s murder. Croft is a dangerous felon. They might be a threat to her. We’d like to know if he’s contacted her.”

“She has a security detail to deal with threats.”

Danni folded her arms as frustration built. Yeah, mayors were busy people, but during a valid investigation, detectives should be able to ask them pertinent questions.

“Sergeant, I just want to ask her if she knew him in any capacity. Maybe he’s talked to her; maybe he’s presented himself to her with a different name. I’m just following the evidence, and I’m trying to locate a suspect in the Thomas Johnston murder.”

“I understand. The thing is, the mayor is unavailable for some reason.”

“Unavailable? For how long?”

“Your guess is as good as mine. I can’t even get ahold of theDA.”

Danni was quiet for a minute.

“Do you have any other leads pertaining to Moore?” Harper asked.

“Not really.”

Then Harper surprised Danni. “Well, I’m not going to impede your investigation in any way. All I’m going to say is, follow the leads you have. Are we clear?”

Marrs’s eyebrow went up in surprise.

“Crystal,” Danni said.

Marrs ended the connection. “We going to the Heights?”

“You bet. Let’s go talk to the mayor.”
