“Penny for your thoughts.”

“They’re a little muddled right now. On my way to the shooting scene, I did something I’ve never done before.”

“Exceed the speed limit?”

She grinned and Gabe laughed. Danni realized how comfortable he made her feel.

“I prayed, Danni. I’m trying to understand your faith.”

“Don’t try to understand my faith. Grow your own. You won’t regret it.” She held his gaze and felt so connected. Champ came over and nuzzled her hand. She took the dog into her arms.

“Fair enough. I know you don’t want to go back in time, Danni, but I’ve really missed you.” She started to speak and he stopped her. “Let me finish.”

Danni gave a nod.

“I need to get something off my chest. I dated a lot of women before you but when we eloped, I had my own type of Damascus Road experience. It was one and done clarity. You are the only woman for me; no one else will ever do. You think maybe you can give me another chance? Give us another chance?”

Danni’s voice caught in her throat, a cascading wave of emotion enveloping her. She gripped his hand, not able to stop the tear falling down her cheek. “If you’re willing to give me another chance.”

“You bet I am.” He leaned forward and she met him halfway. The kiss was warm and precious. For a minute their eyes held one another. Gabe pulled her close and Danni rested her head on his chest. So much resolved, so much unknotted. They stayed that way for a while, not long enough for Danni, but she knew she needed to get some sleep.

“I’d better go,” Gabe said. “We’re both tired. See you in the morning?”

“Sure, both of us are off work.”

“I’ll let myself out.”

He got up and left Danni seated on the step, dog in her arms. She sat there for a while after he was gone, stroking the dog’s soft fur, a silly smile on her face. Despite everything, she felt happy and content, excited for what the future with Gabe held.
