“Ira HoffmanSr. shot you?” Gabe asked.

Curtis nodded. “He did. He said the only reason he didn’t kill me was because of my wife, his sister. She was an invalid most of our marriage. She was also the reason I kept all of this quiet. Maryann needed me; even with only one leg, I was her support. I went on disability, moved to Barton Plaza, and lived my life as best I could.” There was a catch in his voice, and he looked down for a moment. “She’s dead now three years.” Looking up, his eyes moist, Curtis seemed to gather himself. “I have nothing left to lose. I’ll do everything I can to help you bring Ira to justice.”

“Was Dace Greeley involved in any of this?”

“I don’t know. It’s possible Ira paid him off, but I can’t confirm that. However, I do know Ira lived in fear all these years there was proof of what he did still archived somewhere in the PD. I saw the fear when he came to Maryann’s funeral. And I believe that’s why he wants to get rid of the department. His next plan would be to demolish the building and be certain there was never any trace of his crime. My hat is off to Investigator Hill for preserving something.”

Danni watched and listened as Gabe pinned Curtis down. He’d have to be grilled by accident investigation, but with an eyewitness account, the odds were great they’d get a criminal referral, even after all this time. There was no statute of limitations on murder.

Gabe put Curtis in touch with Heflin and then put him in a cab to go tell his story again. When he came back in the house, Danni met him, smiling.

“What?”

“There you go, Investigator Fox, on your way to stopping another bully.”

He grinned. “Guess it’s my calling.” He took her in his arms and pressed his lips to hers. As she slipped her arms around his neck, Danni felt a peace and love she vowed never to let slip from her grasp again.
