“You find any evidence of a shooter in the alley?” Gabe asked.
Jess shook his head. “Didn’t have a chance to look.”
Gomez held out his phone. “Where did this video come from?”
Gabe and the homicide detectives leaned close to watch the video, just uploaded to social media. In the grainy video Thomas was running. Jess drew his weapon, crouched, fired, and Thomas went down.
Jess swallowed and Gabe saw his Adam’s apple working. “I don’t know, LT, because I did not shoot that man.”
Just then a loud explosion sounded, like a high-powered firework going off in the confined spaces of the alley.
Emergency radio traffic exploded as well. Projectiles started flying their way and Gabe knew this was the end of the investigation. Gomez called for backup and the scramble was on to get the body, whatever evidence they could recover, and hightail it out of Dodge before anyone got hurt.
