“I wish I had answers.”

Danni checked the clock. She had to get to work; there wereinterviews to conduct. “I’ve got to go. Have a good day, Gabe.”

“You too, Danni, be safe.”

Danni ended the connection, regretting several things all at once. Most notably the knowledge Gabe had left the PD because of her. And that Madden had taken him off the Ramos investigation. Why she didn’t have the courage to tell him anyofthis, because she really liked working with and around him.

She finished her coffee and left for the station. She truly wished Gabe was still working the case. This was another oddity. It was policy for the prosecutor’s office to work hand in hand with the PD on officer-involved shootings. They are always complex and complicated investigations. But this new CP seemed to have decided enough investigation had already been completed. She hadn’t even assigned someone in Gabe’s place. Since Jess had been fired, Danni feared the next shoe to drop would be criminal charges. True, there was no proof, but that didn’t stop the firing.

“Glad you decided to join us.” Matt was characteristically sarcastic when Danni arrived.

“Two minutes late. Lighten up.”

“But it’s a big day. You heard the news?”

Danni sat down. “I did. What a mess.”

“Who do you think will be tapped for chief?”

“Raven, probably. We need to be thinking about the two interviews we have in front of us.”

“People are taking bets.”

This side of Matt drove Danni crazy. She hated gossip and the fact that cops seemed to thrive on it along with speculation. The department would be rife with speculation until a new chief was selected.

“Can we just get going? I’m ready to talk to Ellis.”

“Canceled.”

“What?”

“Yep. Ellis called right after Jess was fired. He’s off to the prosecutor’s office to find out what charges Madden plans to recommend are filed against Jess.”

Danni brought a hand to her forehead. She’d not thought through all the ramifications of the firing or the resignation.

“Sucks all the way to the corner and back.”

Eyes down, Danni spoke half to herself. “I guess I have time to review more riot footage before we go to Hoffman.” She looked up. “He didn’t cancel, did he?”

“Not so far.”

Danni powered up her computer, trying to concentrate while worry built. Would Madden refer Jess to the county DA for felony charges?
