“What’s the verdict with you?” Gabe asked.

“Separated shoulder. Have to see a doctor.” He tried to shrug and grimaced. He saw the melted evidence bag. “Hard to remember evidence when you’re worried about burning to death.”

“Gabe saw the guy who might have thrown the cocktail,” Danni told him.

“First good news I’ve heard.”

“Whoever set this fire didn’t care who else got hurt,” Gabe said. Danni could tell he was angry.

“We’re good, Gabe,” she said. “Do what you need to do. I’ll make notifications. If you still have something to investigate, go for it.”

Gabe nodded, worried expression on his face. Then he did something she didn’t expect. He stepped forward and gathered her into a tight embrace. “I’m very glad both of you are okay,” he whispered into her ear. He held her tight for a brief time before releasing her and walking off to where most of the residents had gathered.

Taken aback, Danni caught Matt watching her.

“He didn’t hug me.”

She said nothing, just shook her head and walked away from him, still on fire from the hug.

Seeing Natasha standing with the lady in the wheelchair, who was crying, refocused Danni. It made her angry. Whoever threw the incendiary device could have killed more than her and Matt. She held up the ghost gun evidence bag and prayed there would be something useful there and that whoever tossed the firebomb would not escape justice. She’d do her best to that end, not only for her and Matt, but for Natasha and all the innocents here who just lost their homes.
