“Me?”

“Says you’ve been harassing a Tribune reporter when you should be suspended over what happened last night.”

Wow,Danni thought, news travels fast.

“We weren’t harassing anyone. We were trying to conduct an interview pertinent to our investigation.”

“Not according to Derek Ellis. He says you were rude and unprofessional. He’s filed a formal complaint with internal affairs.”

“Totally bogus.” Danni was angry now. “We’ve been trying to set up an interview with him for a few days. He was the rude and unprofessional one.”

“He claims you videotaped him without his permission.”

Danni shook her head. “Not true.”

“What’s this about cameras in the alley at Barton Plaza?”

“Nothing to do with the PD.”

“What do you mean? Are there cameras recording everything in Barton Plaza or not?”

“There were cameras in the alley between Nineteenth and Eighteenth Streets,” Danni said. “I don’t know who put them up or who was monitoring them.”

“Yet you led Mr. Ellis to believe he’d been recorded.”

“Yes, as a legal tactic. We’re trying to find out who murdered Thomas Johnston. Period.” Danni felt her anger rising. She and Marrs should be out investigating, not answering petty complaints.

The chief sat back in her chair, pensive expression on her face. Danni didn’t know her well enough to have any idea what she was thinking. Raven had never been a hard-driving individual. Frank Grace thought she was harmless but in the wrong line of work. Danni just didn’t know. Several uncomfortable minutes ticked by.

Finally the chief spoke. “Mayor White is concerned about those cameras.”

“Really?” Danni asked.

“Yes. As she was explaining to me Ellis’s concerns, I got the feeling the idea of cameras recording activity troubled her. She is anxious to get a look at any video if it exists.”

“It’s possible Thomas Johnston was monitoring the cameras, but we just don’t know.”

“Do you think you can find out?”

“Anything is possible if we’re allowed to be investigators.” Danni was more snarky with the comment than she intended.

To her surprise, Raven laughed. “You sound like your father. I’m sorry to be a micromanager. I’ll let you in on a secret. No one was more surprised than I was when they tapped me to replace Estes.” She paused and took a deep breath. “I’m trying to get my sea legs here. It’s clear to me White wants to run the police department through me. I’m not going to let her. I’m sorry I was harsh with you and your partner, Danni, but I was pushed by White. I thought about it overnight and resolved to ignore her and push back when I can.”

“Thank you,” Danni said.

“Continue your investigation. However, be cautious. Something is going on with Mayor White. I don’t know what. I’m dying to know if there’s any video of activity in the alley, because she certainly fears there is. Call me directly if you find anything.”

“You got it.”
