CHAPTER47

Wednesday morning started out on the best note possible, as far as Danni was concerned. She and Marrs had just settled into the office when they got a call from records.

“Detective Grace, we got a hit on the partial print the lab sent over. I sent the information to your screen. Even though it was a partial, there’s an exact match because your guy has a record. He’s been printed lots. We sent the gun to ballistics. As soon as I hear from them, I’ll let you know.”

Danni logged on to her computer. The match was Jareb Moore.

“Woo-hoo.” She gave a clap. “We got him.” She showed the page to Marrs. Her email pinged with a message. Ballistics was able to say with some certainty that the ghost gun fired the bullets that killed Thomas Johnston, but they couldn’t make the match for Hobbs. It was still more than enough to pick Moore up and bring him in for questioning, if they could find him.

Immediately she sent a text to Gabe. This was something he would want to know. She told him they’d be working on a warrant and hopefully be serving it before the end of the day.

Wish I could be there with you,Gabe texted back.

Danni looked over Moore’s record, perusing known associates. He had several bad actors listed. None of the names were familiar. When would they have an ID on the third guy?

The only address they had for Moore was the one he’d given Gabe the day he was arrested. One block away from Barton Plaza, it was to a small duplex, three doors down from the tiny house homeless compound. The license plate on the black SUV Moore had been observed driving did not have an address; it was still “application in process” according to the DMV. Still, Danni put out a BOLO for the vehicle, adding the warning that Moore could possibly be armed and dangerous.

Before they headed out, Marrs called communications and requested a black-and-white to drive down the street to see if anyone appeared to be home and to look for the black SUV. Over the radio, the uniforms said there was no SUV and the place looked vacant.

Since Danni considered Moore dangerous, and she had no idea who might be with him, she radioed the unit to stand by until they got there.

“Place sure does look vacant,” Danni said as they pulled up. “He was still in town two nights ago; I saw him outside the station.”

“He could be out recruiting rioters,” Marrs said as they walked toward the unit.

Danni did a double take. “Ha, that was a Matt Shaver snark if I ever heard one.”

She knocked and the door swung open.

“Hello?” Danni called out, hand on her gun. There was no response.

“What do you think?” she asked Marrs.

“We have paper for the guy, not the house. And we can’t say the crime occurred here.”

“But we can do a sweep to make sure no one is hurt or incapacitated in some way. Anything in plain view is fair game.”

To be on the safe side, Danni drew her handgun and stepped inside, calling out as she went. “Mr. Moore? Mr. Jareb Moore?” Her voice echoed through the house. “LaRosa PD. Everybody okay in here?”

Carefully Danni and Marrs cleared each room. No one was home—the place was deserted, maybe abandoned. As Danni looked around, it occurred to her, just by the trash strewn about, more than one person had been staying in the residence.

Marrs called dispatch and asked for a phone number for the landlord or responsible party for the unit. While he waited for a callback, he went into the master bedroom.

Danni walked through the living room and kitchen, looking carefully at what had been left behind. There were a lot of fast-food wrappers and cartons. In the kitchen every plate, bowl, and cup seemed to be piled in the sink. There was mail here and there, but most of it was addressed to occupant.

Something caught her eye in the corner near a trash can. She picked up a crumpled piece of paper with gloved hands and straightened it out. It was a photo of Leonard White.

“Hey, Marrs, look at this.” She showed him the photo.

“Who’s that?”

“The mayor’s kid.”

Marrs squinted and looked closer. “How do you know?”

“I met him once. Why would Moore have his picture?”

“There’s some stuff in the master bedroom you should see.”
