CHAPTER TWELVE

Jay

This is not the news I want to start my day off with! “For fuck’s sake!” I jump out of my chair and punch an invisible bag instead of the clinic’s wall. I’m done with this conniving lying wench who has dragged me along with her empty promises of setting me free.

According to the email from my solicitor in South Africa, Cheryl has still not signed the papers. In fact, she wasn’t even home when he sent an employee around to check. And no one, including her new beau, have any idea of where she’s at.

To be honest, a lot of shit people don’t expect can go down in South Africa. The crime rate is ridiculous. What if something’s happened to her? Well, it’d save me a load of money. Yeah, yeah, that sounds awful, but if they’d ever met the woman…

After three years, my divorce is still hanging over my head. And Cheryl, who’d wanted it in the first place, is missing, leaving all her friends and her parents frantic as to what has happened to her. I try to feel worried, but I’m so over her drama, I’m unable to muster a single grain of emotion when it came to my almost ex-wife.

Grabbing my phone, and not giving a toss what the time is back there, I dial my solicitor.

“Sorry to wake you,” I say, and wince at my sharp tone.

“No, you’re not. I waited up. Knew the email would piss you off.” His voice is tired yet sardonic.

“Fuck, bro.” Johan was a school buddy before he became my divorce lawyer. “I need this sorted like yesterday, man.”

“Ja, I feel your pain. But she’s gone. Left her car and only took her clothes according to the rubbish staying in your house now.”

My temper flares at his words. “Well, get him out and I don’t care what it costs, find her. I need her and her bullshit out of my life.”

“Ja, ja, on it. How’s life treating you?”

I don’t have time for chit chat, I’m already running late, but Johan is an old friend.

“Good. You and Linette should come over for a visit some time. Listen, I gotta run. Thanks, bro.”

I drop the phone on my desk and will the grouchy beast wanting to punch something really hard to subdue.

Memories of the day I walked into our home and found Cheryl naked and gyrating on top of her personal trainer in the middle of our lounge catch me off guard. It’s an image I’ve not allowed my mind to go back to for a long time, and one which still has the power to knock me for a six.

I need her and anything to do with her out of my life. I want to move one. Be whole again and be with a woman who deserves me. My hands ache from the force with which I clench them. I won’t allow that woman to upturn my day.

A cold drink should help. I fling open my office door and stomp into the small kitchenette. The dark cloud follows me.

“Any luck finding us a replacement for Belinda?” I ask Myrtle, who’s sitting at the small table chomping on muesli and yogurt.

She shakes her gray head and swallows. “Nothing. Sorry. I’ve arranged the patients so that both you and Simmi can fit them in together on your outpatient lists for now.” She glances up. “If that’s okay?”

I nod. It sure is okay. I’ve not gone near Siimmi since last night and work would be the perfect excuse.
