CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Jay

Ah shit. I can’t help the absolute satisfaction that spreads through me as Simmi rattles toward her car. I’ve done that. Me. I caused that sexy, strong, charismatic goddess to lose her shit. I can’t wait to have her scream my name as she turns to putty in my hands.

Her little car speeds past and I shake my head and adjust my pants. I’d lie if I said she’d doesn’t do the same to me. The difference is, I’m no longer fighting it.

Grabbing a few things and making a mental note to stop by the bottle shop on the way back, I can’t help but notice a few stares aimed at me. Yes, I’m a big boy, bigger than most. But these aren’t the normal hidden glances and stolen peeks. These are angry, cold, and oh wait, there’s one undressing me with her big brown orbs now. It must be about the emergency on the beach the day before. Towns have a way of turning truths into long stories with sharp tails.

I turn into the last aisle and find Doris chatting with a customer. Both pause, glance toward me, then shuffle off. Argh. This is the one thing I hate of small towns. Gossipers.

And then it hits me. Doris was at the clinic last night and she’s come to her own conclusions, which aren’t all that wrong, but she’ll use them to harm and slander. I grab the last item on my list and make my way over to the counter.

“Hi Doctor Hill,” said the young woman behind the counter, all smiles.

Doris, who’s behind a second checkout glances up and then says something under her breath to the customer, who turns and gives me the dirtiest look ever created.

That’s it, I’ve had enough of this shit.

“Can you stop this thing from moving?” I ask the girl pointing to the black conveyer belt.

“Yeah… I guess.” She nods reaching beneath the till.

I waste no time and hop onto the checkout counter.

“Can I please have everyone’s attention?”

My voice echoes across the store and everyone, even the screeching toddler stills and turns their eyes on me.

“Get down from there, you blundering oaf.”

Doris huffs as she steps out from her counter and marches over to where I am standing. I show her the hardest expression I own and look down at her.

“If you want to know about the goings on in the clinic, why don’t you all book yourselves a free health check this week. Oh, and any rumors you’ve indulged in concerning a nurse who would lay her life down to make sure you’re looked after are bullshit! Next person I hear talking about her will get to deal with me.”

My gaze roams over the store and I make sure the impromptu speech has reached all ears.

I bite back the urge to laugh at all the flabbergasted expressions staring back at me, then I hop off.

A single pair of hands clapping echoes through the silence followed by a, “Woo hoo, preach it, Doctor.”

“Yeah, Doctor, preach it.”

I turn to find Anna and her three boys standing in the fruit and veg section. Nodding, I jump down. I pay for my goods and leave the store. After dumping the two boxes filled with bottles in the back of my vehicle I walk to the front door. I’m barely down the road when my phone rings.

“Yup,” I squeeze it between my right shoulder and ear.

“Jay, it’s Cindy,” The woman’s east London accent is heavier than usual. “Look, sorry. This doesn’t happen often, but I need to you to come in and take over from me. Jerry bought curry from that new place last night and it’s upset my stomach.”

I hold the phone away from my ear as she greets the loo in a long deep growl.

“No worries. I’ll be right over,” I shout at the device.

Fuck. Gonna have to postpone my plans for Simmi, but not by much if I can help it.

I race home, drop my groceries, get dressed, and make for the clinic.

“Where is she?” I ask as I step through the front door of my clinic.
