CHAPTER FOUR

Jay

“Jay!” a woman calls after me.

I won’t waste any more time spelling out to her I’m not interested in what she has to offer. My focus shifts to the fact both Simmi and the fucknut twins are nowhere to be seen.

I grab Steve’s shoulder. “Did you see where Simmi went?”

“No, bruh.” His stoned, yellow gaze widens.

Fucking dope heads.

I scan the area before heading off the beach and over the small bridge toward her cabin. My heart’s thumping and my fists are ready to mete out some punishment. If those two fuckers…

I stop to find Simmi hunched over a body.

“What happened?” I kneel down beside the limp body she’s trying desperately to move.

“None of your business,” she says with a bite before trying to stand only to come crashing down with what looks like…

“Is it your mom? Simmi, I can help.”

“Don’t need it.” She rolls her mom off her body, stands, and dusts herself off.

“Why? Because it’s me offering?”

Her head snaps up and her gaze burns its way into my core.

“Just go home, Jay.”

She leans over and tries to pick her unconscious mom up a second time but ends up back on the ground, groaning.

“God dammit, Simmi. Your pride’s your worst enemy.” I’ve had enough of her bullshit.

She jumps to her feet and huffs. “I don’t need you seeing us like this.”

Her words strike a chord, but there’s no way I’m leaving her here to deal with whatever family shit her mother’s in. They both need some TLC. I gently push Simmi back and slip my arms beneath her mother’s body. Where Simmi is voluptuous, her mother is bone thin and light as a feather. I cradle the limp women and the stale stench of booze and piss hits me like the bitch slap I know Simmi wants to give me.

I ignore it and make my way to the main house.

“No. Mine.” Simmi points to her cabin, giving no further explanation.

I nod, turn, and head for the cabin with Simmi stomping beside me. She opens the sliding door and waves me inside.

“On the bed, please.” Her tone is softer. Her eyes brim with tears and her cheeks flush in humiliation.

I lay her mom down and roll the woman on her side. “Get me a towel and a bucket…”

“You can go. I know how to make sure she doesn’t aspirate,” Simmi says.

That she’s giving me my marching orders is loud and clear.

We’ve both seen it. She more than me, obviously, when a drunk or a druggie suffocates from their own spew. I realize I’ve invaded enough of her personal space and walk out, coming to stand on the small porch. The moon is as bright as a silver coin. Not far from us, the ocean applauds her beauty and I’m wondering if I’m wasting my time.

“Thanks.” Simmi’s sudden appearance startles me.

“No problem.” I turn to face her.
