CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Simmi

“Mom! Stop fussing. It’s just a barbeque,” I call from the lounge.

We’re already half an hour late and Dad’s pacing the porch like a grouchy bear. Men aren’t pretty when they be hangry.

“Hold ya horses, will ya?”

Mom saunters down the stairs and my heart drops to my thong clad feet.

She’s out to stir. She’s wearing a pair of denim hot pants, and a tight, three-quarter sleeved t-shirt which reveals the color of her purple silky bra underneath, rounded off with a pair of wedges. Her lips are painted deep red. Her neck is bound to break with all the bling hanging from it, not to mention disco era hoop earrings which are probably the only thing which look half decent on her.

Dad stomps inside, looks her over, huffs, then stomp toward the front door. “Can we go now?”

“Sure honey, let me just grab my bag.”

Mom flutters her mascaraed lashes at him bending over so that he gets a full view of what she’s about to flaunt at my boyfriend’s home.

“Awe for God’s sake, Bess.” Dad whips open the door and stomps down the wooden steps sending an angry vibration through the Queenslander.

“Really, Mom. You couldn’t just be...” I wave my hand in the air looking for the right words.

“What? Prim, proper?” She stands, hand on hip. “Your father needs to be reminded of what he’s got.”

“But not tonight.” I groan as she sexy walks out the front.

“Tonight, is as good a night as any. You’re not the only one who thinks your boss is hot. Even if you’re the one who gets to shag him on the beach.”

Fuck!

It’s a tense drive over to Jay’s place and by the time Dad pulls into the drive, all I can think of is hopping out and running for the hills. We walk up to the front door, but just before I reach for the bell, I turn and face down both my parents.

“I never ask anything of you, but tonight, please just try to be… not you,” I plead.

Dad pats me on my shoulder.

“No worries, honey. Now would you mind knocking? My stomach’s already eating itself.”

My hopes turn to ash.

I force back my fear, nod, and am about to press the bell when the door opens and Jay appears, dressed in a calico white button up dress shirt, its sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and its front half open, matched by a pair of khaki long shorts. His hair’s pulled up in a bun with a smile that would melt the north pole.

Before I can say anything, Mom pushes past me.

“Doctor Hill, I presume?”

She reaches for Jay’s outstretched hand and as he glances at me, I roll my eyes.

“Mrs. Parker, so glad you could make it.” He grips her hand, bringing it to his mouth and laying a kiss on her knuckles.

“Oh my. Simmi, you’ve snagged yourself a keeper. Try not to lose him, will ya?” Then she leans back while not letting go of Jay’s hand. “See how it’s done, Jim?” she says pointedly to my dad.

“Mr. Parker please come in.”

“Jim will do,” Dad said.

We follow Jay inside, my mom hanging on his arm and every word. He seems to be handling it well. Must be used to woman throwing themselves at him. A sliver of green trickles down the center of my heart. I’m loath to admit I don’t want to see him with anyone else but me.
