I’m not surprised by her question. Since meeting her mom and dad, so much about Simmi makes sense now.

“We don’t. Relationships are hard work, but I think we’ll have a lot more fun together. I suspect your mom and dad have always been this way. It doesn’t mean you or I or we will be.”

I shift on my seat and tug her toward me so she once again straddles my lap, and we are face to face.

“I’m scared, Jay. I’ve never allowed myself to get close to anyone. What if we don’t work out?”

I hear her fears and echo them.

“I’ve loved before and got burned,” I start, then pause.

Is now the time to tell her I’m still married? Shit.

Then I decide against it. “But I survived and found you.”

“I don’t think I can survive losing you.”

Her confession slays me.

“You won’t. You’re mine, I’m yours. There’s nothing or no one that can change that. We’ll take it slow if you want to, but we will work, I swear it to you.”

I pull her down and seal my promise with a kiss, vowing to find Cheryl and get her to sign those goddam papers if it means I have to threaten her with hell on earth.
