“Oh no, I’m where I belong.”

“This is not the time nor the place Mrs. Dorsett,” Jay said, as he leans across me.

“Oh? Well, just know we’ve all seen what sort of woman she is.”

The old bag points a crocked finger at me, and I have to force myself not to grab it and snap it off.

“But I never thought it of you, Doctor.” She sniggers, stands, rubs her hands down her dress, and waddles off.

I glimpse something cross Jay’s face but put it down to irritation with the mean hag. “Why would they even invite her?”

“Beats me,” Jay said through what sounded like gritted teeth.

“Oh look, Anna’s about to throw the bouquet.” I squeal.

“You should go,” he urges, and I hesitate.

“Come on, it’s only a game.” He winks.

I stand, pause, and am about to change my mind when Fran grabs my wrist as she trots past.

“Come on you. Anna wants us all up there, married or not. Remember the new tradition she wants to create?”

I nod and follow her, leaving Jay behind.

Anna had mentioned she was going to invite all the woman up when she threw the bouquet. It wasn’t about the single finding love. It was about those already in relationships strengthening their love, too. God, I love her sentiment.

Fran pulls me to the center of the group of women as Rhett helps Anna onto a chair.

“All right,” she shouts as she turns her back on us.

“One, two, three,” we all shout.

Like a movie in slow motion, I see Anna’s arms rise above her head with a large bouquet of Aussie Honeysuckle, Billy Buttons, Canberra Bells and Desert Flame. The bouquet then takes on a life of its own. Spreading its pollinated wings, it flies up, then drops.

I don’t reach up. I forget to jump. My gaze is glued to the blooms floating above me and then, they’re in my hands.

“Woo hoo!” Kylie and Fran squeal.

Anna hops off the chair and runs to me, wrapping her arms around my neck.

“It’s a sign,” she whispers.

She plants a kiss on my cheek, then runs to the dance floor when the song Titanium plays.

“God my feet hurt.” I slip of my heels as Jay drives us home.

“You caught the flowers,” he says, turning onto the main road.

“I sure did. Anna reckons they’re a sign.” I roll my eyes and wave my hand to show him how ridiculous I think it is.

“I sure hope so.”

His words hit me dead center.

“But we’re taking it slow right?” I repeat more to the scared shitless me than to him.
