“So, you like this girl, Matty?”

It’s a fishing lure that I don’t want to tickle, but I’m not an angry teenager who relies on the silent treatment to avoid talking about personal things. I don’t want to shut Al out, but I also don’t know how to respond.

“C’mon, Matt, don’t give me the cold shoulder. It’s been forever since you've shown any interest in a lady. Not since you started the garage.”

Al whines a lot, but he’s like a second dad to me.

“I think I do, but I’ve only known her for nine hours.”

“Did you hit on her like you usually do?” ”

“No”—my voice is sharp—“it’s not like that.”

“That’s all I need to know.” Al’s trying and failing to hide a smirk.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” That was definitely snappy.

“Nothing, absolutely nothing, Matty.”

“Dammit, what gears do you have turning in that rusty brain of yours?”

“Just relax. We’re almost there.”

I look up and see the Walmart sign a couple blocks ahead.

I scan the parking lot entrance area and see Lenore’s car across the street with an older model sedan parked right behind it. An elderly gentleman and what looks to be his grandson are standing with her on the sidewalk. I’m relieved she decided to let them stay.

Al steers the hauler to the curb in front of her car and backs it closer. As soon as he stops, I unbuckle and jump out.

Lenore has already taken a couple of steps toward the big tow truck without realizing I’m in it, and I watch surprise lift her features. She smiles tentatively and picks up her pace. As she approaches, I give her a quick once-over but don’t see anything amiss. I take a deep breath, and, reassuring myself that she’s not hurt, just shaken up, I meet her halfway.

Forcing myself to resist the urge to fold her up in my arms, I maintain my distance, conscious of our audience. Al already thinks she’s more than just my typical casual hookup, and I don’t want to give him any more ammunition.

Even though with Lenore, it feels anything but casual.
