She goes back to searching and seems to have narrowed it down to the appetizers.

Taking a guess, I offer, “Want to split some appetizers?”

She makes an adorably shocked face like she just got called down to play The Price is Right, or I’ve told her that her car really is miraculously fixed. “Are you sure you want to venture away from your meat with a side of meat?”

“You pick one, and I’ll pick one?”

“I’m game.”

I wave the waitress over from where she’s stacking rolled bundles of utensils for the dinner service.

“Ready to order?”

“I think so,” Lenore speaks up first, and I concede to her. “I think I want the buffalo chicken wings?”

“Sure thing. Appetizer or full size?”

Lenore looks at me. “Let's do full size and the potato skins too.”

Steve was raving about them the last time we went out, so I’m glad she picked them.

“Any dipping sauce?”

“Ranch, please,” Lenore speaks up quickly. “Two if I can?”

The waitress nods and keeps writing.

“A BBQ one too.”

“Sure thing, honey. Anything else?”

“Fried pickles.”

“All right. Be right up.”

“Fried pickles?” I can’t think of a time I’ve ever had the desire to deep fry a pickle.

“What?”

I raise an eyebrow.

“They’re good. You’ll see.”

I scoff.

“Trust me.”

“Actually, I’m going to do the appetizers too.”

“Oh my god, you’re trying something new?”

I hear Lenore snort in laughter. “Yep, feeling adventurous today.”

“You’re a good influence, honey. Got him out of the shop and trying new things.” This time she’s talking to Lenore.

Flustered by Sandy’s assumption, she sputters slightly, and I quickly name two more sides from the menu so she doesn’t have to answer any more questions.

We banter back and forth while we wait for our meal and a few more people wander in for a late lunch. Steve greets them and seats them at another table close to the front, letting us keep our privacy.
