For a suspended moment, my mind blanks, and the only thought that surfaces is, Oh, thank god.

I must have said it aloud because Matt’s face splits in happiness.

“Would it be awkward if I asked you out sometime?”

Laughter fills my chest like the happy bubbles that trace their way up champagne flutes on New Year’s.

“Well, yes, but I’d probably be the one to make it that way. You saw how I reacted earlier.” A genuine smile feels foreign to me, but I feel it stretching across my lips.

“Well, that’s alright then.” Matt winks. “But if it gets weird, or you feel pressured or uncomfortable, I need you to tell me.”

My heart thumps in my chest, and I watch him, noticing the sincerity of his words and his body language. “I will.”

I let one of my reality shows play, and we chat about mundane things. Before long, I feel myself drifting off to sleep.

I wake to the sound of Norman scratching around in the litter box and see that Matt’s also fallen asleep. At some point, he turned further toward me and stretched a leg out. He looks absolutely exhausted, and I know he was nearly as busy out in the garage today as I was in the store.

I don’t have the heart to wake him, so I pull a throw blanket off the side chair and cover him up. Not wanting to leave the warmth of the moment yet, I cue up something I know will put me to sleep and turn the captions on so it won’t make any noise
