“A medical conference. I’m a doctor.”

Considering I was surrounded by physicians in my life, I’d have loved to be able to spend time with someone who wasn’t one. However, I wouldn’t hold it against him. Of course, knowing medical conferences, I immediately thought of the many married men who used them as an occasion to cheat on their wives.

My eyes darted to his left hand, but I didn’t spy a ring or the tan line from one recently removed.

He chuckled at my lack of subtlety. “I’ve been divorced five years.”

“Sorry to hear it?” I wasn’t at all.

The smile slipped from his face. “That would only make one of us. You sticking to the bar all evening or heading back to the wedding festivities?”

“Neither. It’s time to get some food in my stomach.” I’d skipped the overpriced salmon earlier and now needed some soaking material for my liquid dinner.

“Want some company?”

I like the way he asked instead of assumed. “I’d love some.”

Lucas took the bill from Teddy. “I insist.”

“You might not after you see the charge.” I’d probably pounded down over two hundred dollars’ worth of top-shelf liquor.

He didn’t flinch, instead plopping down his black Amex.

I took a hundred out of my purse and answered his unasked question. “Teddy is the best bartender ever, so the tip is on me.”

“Thank you, miss.” Teddy handled the card swiftly and swept up the tip. “Have a good evening.”

“You, too.” The night was already looking up. And perhaps it was time to lean into the type of evening a crazy girl would enjoy.
