Ava is still asleep.

I look at the beautiful young woman wrapped in my sheets and ask myself for the millionth time what I’m going to do.

She can’t stay with me forever, and she’s too much of a distraction in a time when I should be more level-headed. I haven’t heard anything from Gibbs yet on the Bratva guys. It hasn’t been any time for me to form any opinions on what that means, but it does make me doubt myself. Like maybe I am just worried and more wary than I should be.

In terms of Ava though, she has to get back to her life, and I have to give it back to her.

When though?

I think I’m addicted to this fascination I have with her.

Even when I try to keep it at bay, it pushes through. It’s going to get me in trouble. It already has.

My phone buzzes next to me. It’s a text from Salvatore.

You still here?

I text back:

I am. Come see me in five.

I drag on my pants and take one last glance at Ava before I leave the room.

This suite is one of the guest suites I’ve claimed for myself. It’s like a little apartment, so the bedroom is separate from the kitchen and living room. It’s one of the biggest, and since I claimed it, it really is basically mine.

When the boys first set the place up, they were always talking about each of us having a suite.

They do, but Frankie and I were the only ones who didn’t follow them. It was strange to them because when we were younger, we were the worst two when it came to sex and getting up to all kinds of shit with women. We couldn’t have been more terrible examples and were shocked to shit when the guys set up a sex club.

The biggest reason why we didn’t join in the venture was because Pa wanted us to be serious and focus on business. We did just that.

Salvatore gets here in exactly five minutes. He comes in with a smirk on his face he’s trying to hide. He saw me last night as I ushered Ava to the room. He was coming out of his room, which is down the hall from here.

He’s always here with Mimi, his wife, whether she’s pregnant or not. I can imagine them still coming here when they’re old. Nick and his wife, Mia, are the same. It’s just Gabe and Charlotte who seemed to follow the pattern I had with Sorcha, although they tend to come every so often.

I swear to God I shouldn’t know these things, but they tell me.

“Came to check on you,” Salvatore says, but his eyes are on the bedroom door. He looks back at me like he has something he wants to ask me but is holding off.

“Did you? Or were you snooping?” I smirk and sit down on the sofa.

“Both.” He chuckles and sits opposite me. “Can’t blame a concerned brother. Be worried if I don’t care, Vin.”

“Yeah, I guess.”

“I really did come to check on you. We haven’t spoken since the other day. I’m sure you could tell I was avoiding talking about business.”

“Yeah, I could. I didn’t really want to talk business then.”

“I was giving you space. This is probably the worst place to talk and bad timing, but Mimi and I are taking Skye on a little road trip to the countryside.” He smiles proudly, and I feel proud of the father he is. Skye is his little girl. She looks just like Mimi. Like a little fairy.

“Countryside?”

He chuckles. “That’s what she’s calling it. It’s a clever ruse to get me to drive to this little bakery she heard about in Ohio.”

“Christ, Salvatore, Ohio?” The man is a badass mobster, but that woman has him wrapped around her finger. There’s nothing on this earth he won’t do for her.

“Vin, I can’t say no to that woman. She drives me crazy, but I fucking love her, and she knows it. And now that we have Skye, it’s like I have two little women on my hands. Thank God the next one’s a boy. It’ll be some balance in my life.”
