“You’re very welcome. How are you feeling?”

“Better, but fragile. Very fragile and scared.” I’m going to be off for the next two weeks to heel. I hope I can feel better in that time.

“Lilly… Christian hasn’t really told me anything so please don’t think that my presence means everyone’s talking about you. I know bare minimum as in I know you were attacked where you live, but that’s it. It’s enough and I’ve been around a long time to put a few things together and complete a puzzle.”

“I guess I’ve been a mystery.”

“The offer still stands to talk when you need to. Unless if you don’t. The boys asked me to take care of the girls at the club. It was my first job. I was too young to even be in the club, but they took me everywhere they went and wherever my boy was I wasn’t too far behind.”

I smile at that. The way she talks about Salvatore is nice. It’s heartwarming and you can see they love each other. She’s been with him for so long and they’re married with kids. When I first met her I wondered how she could be so happy being married to a mobster, but she is. She wasn’t with a man like Miguel.

“You do take care of the girls. Mimi. They picked right when they asked you.”

“I used to think they were just being lazy, but then I realized it wasn’t that. It’s because it’s not a job to me. It’s who I am. How I am. so please believe me when I say I genuinely wanted to help.”

I believe her. “Thanks.”

“You don’t have much family around do you?” she says.

“no one. There is just me and Rosie. We…” I stop for a second and think of how to proceed. I was always careful when talking about anything linking back to Colombia but maybe to move forward I have to let go of the past.

I know she would have done her various employment and personal checks on me and known that I was married and went back to my maiden name. I’d explained that my husband died and nothing was elaborated on, although I could tell she wanted to ask.

“Rosie’s father wasn’t the best of people. We came back here to start afresh after his death. I feel like I just did everything wrong. All the wrong way.”

“I don’t think you did. I think you did what you could, and I don’t think things are as bad as what you think. Is there anything I can do now?”

I shake my head. “No, I’m better.”

“Are you um… coming back to the club.”

“Yeah, I’m going to.”

“Well just a warning, Giordano men can be really possessive, but they’re the best. I think you’re in good hands.” she nods and I smile accepting her words as truth.

She raises a cookie like she’s doing a toast.

“To the future. I hope to see you dancing in some show put together by the Aurora and really get to know you,” She says and smiles when I lift a cookie too.

“To the future. I would love to have the future you described and dance with the Aurora. It would be nice to have my friend there watching me.”

She looks happy to be called my friend.

We spend the rest of the afternoon talking and she leaves with Skye just before dinner time.

Vera makes dinner and Rosie and I eat, but I’m aware that Christian isn’t back yet and I’m not sure where he is.

I have his number now so I could call him, but I know not to do that.

Relief washes over me when he walks in a little after ten.

Rosie fell asleep a long time ago and I took my post in the living room with a few women’s mags Mimi brought over.

He walks up to me without saying hello and just picks me up from the sofa and kisses me. Stealing my breath away and my mind too. it’s the first time we’ve kissed since I’ve been here.

“Rosie asleep?” he asks pausing the kiss.

“Good, I need to fuck you and I need to shower. Let’s kill two birds with one stone. You haven’t seen my room yet.”
