We get dressed and leave her to sleep. Once we’re downstairs, we head into the kitchen, and Henry puts the coffee machine on.

“What happened to her wrist?” he asks, narrowing his eyes.

“She said she was carrying a heavy bag.” I prop myself down on the stool.

Henry presses his lips together in a thin line of displeasure. “You believe that?”

“No.” I quickly tell him about my little talk with Evie. My brief but effective conversation that’s compelling me to do something.

“A bag definitely didn’t do that to her wrist.”

“No, I think someone grabbed her,” I surmise. Since I don’t think anyone else is tying our girl up, I’m assuming some bastard put his hand on her. “I should check her out, Henry.”

That would be breaking every rule of the auction, and if Evie found out and reported me—not that I think she would—we’d never be allowed back anywhere like that.

Those who love keeping things taboo have a certain code they live by to keep things the way they are.

“No.” Henry shakes his head and pours us each a cup of coffee. “It wouldn’t feel right. I know you can. I can do it if I wanted too. It’s not like we don’t know where she’s staying, but I feel like it would breach something special between us, and she wouldn’t trust us.”

“Right. I get it.” I sigh. “I disagree, but I get it.”

“If she’s with us, she’s okay, so how about we make sure she’s just with us a lot.” He smirks.

“Yeah, that works. What about after?”

We both stare at each other, and the humor recedes from his face.

“Maybe whatever, or whoever did that to her, will be out of the picture by the end of this, and we won’t have to worry about her safety then.” I already know it’s going to be difficult to say goodbye to her, and I’ll want to know she got what she wanted.

“Yeah, maybe. Maybe she’ll trust us enough to tell us by the end,” Henry surmises. “Or not. Whichever, we shouldn’t pry. I don’t want to ruin what we have going.”

“No, you’re right.” I agree with that.

“I’ll take the next two days off work so we can hang out.”

“I’m taking today.” I actually don’t, but I’m taking it off anyway. I need a break from my father. My unscheduled break yesterday will piss him off, but he’s not going to approach me with shit like that.

“Right, then we’ll spend this time with her, and when we’re at work, she can hang out here. We’ll know she’s safe, and we’ll have more fun when we’re together.”

I nod, agreeing.

“We both care about her,” he notes.

“I noticed.”

“Is that okay?”

“It feels okay.”

“But that’s never happened before, Georgiou.”

“It hasn’t.” I rest my elbows on the countertop.

“Have you ever thought that maybe we’re just supposed to be like this?”

“I don’t know.”

“What if we met someone who we both fell for, and we shared her the way we share Evie? You’re telling me you wouldn’t do this permanently?”
