I can’t help but chuckle. “So that’s what smells…”

He holds up his hands. “Better watch yourself. I know you’re ticklish.”

Immediately, I raise my hands in a surrender gesture. “I’ll behave.”

“You know, the doctor mentioned exercise is a great stress reliever. I have a gym here, with a couple of treadmills. If you want to run with me, you’re welcome to.”

I’d rather run in the woods… and despite the nice time we are having presently, I’d rather run back to my life.

But I don’t say that. Instead, I give him a happy smile. “Sure. I’d like that.” Then I pause. “Please tell me you aren’t one of those ‘wake up at an ungodly hour of the morning and run’ people?”

He laughs, shaking his head. “More like an ‘I can’t sleep, so I’m running at midnight’ type of person. But usually, I try to run before breakfast. If I’m not feeling it, I’ll wait until evening, though.”

“Oh, good. That is comforting.” I grin, desperate to ask him about the warehouse and Max… yet unable. “Then sure, I’ll run with you.”

“There’s running attire and sneakers in the closet. Wanna run tomorrow morning? 8:30 or 9:00?”

“Sounds like a plan.”

“I have another plan to run by you.” He leans forward, still sitting on the bed facing me. “I know you want to know about the warehouse. I’ll tell you about it after Bryan leaves, okay?”

Nodding, my heart thumps in my chest. “Okay.”

He grins. “I need you to do me a favor first.”

I raise my brows, having no idea what he’s about to ask me. “Ask away.”

“Start this movie from the beginning, but wait until I return with the popcorn and soda. And you have to eat some of it.” He studies me, a slight frown marring his features. “I’m worried about you not eating much.”

I sigh, annoyed and touched by his concern, yet confused by his request. “You really wanna watchFootloosewith me?”

“Do I even need to answer that question?” He rolls his eyes. “Is that too girly, too?”

I can’t help the burst of laughter that comes out of me. “Well, I wasn’t gonna bring that up again….” A teasing grin is on my face.

“You’re lucky I really like popcorn or I’d be tickling you right now.” He grins, heading to the door, shaking his head.

My smile doesn’t last long. My hand fists my shirt over my heart, the pangs inside my chest making it harder to breathe. Movies and popcorn remind me of Max… I flashback to that first night, when he returned to my apartment to make sure I was safe. I can’t help the tears that course down my cheeks, thinking of all the times Max has tickled me until I could hardly breathe, laughing so hard I cried.

The melancholy swells over me. Wiping my eyes, I lay back on the bed, trying to relax my body to see if I can ‘feel’ him again. Like that night in my dreams.

But I don’t feel him.

All I feel is emptiness… and my despair.

Chapter eight

Irelynn

If someone would have told me that I’d be eating popcorn and watchingFootloosewith William, I would have told them they needed to get their head examined.

Yet here we are, William sprawled beside me on the huge bed, propped up on pillows, his lean muscular legs clad in gray sweatpants, in the room that I’ve been held captive in for four days.

Four days isn’t that long. To me, it feels like an eternity.

I’ve spent my time reading books, watching television, and missing my old life and the people in it.
