And if my worst fears have come true, and she somehow fell for William fucking Anderson, then I’m going to do everything in my power to fight for her until I get her back.

Hell, I’ll even kidnap her if I must. That’s how desperate I am for her.

No goddamn way in hell am I giving up on her.

My teeth gnash together as I picture William’s pale face, blond hair, and ice-blue eyes. It’s ironic that someone who appears so light is full of such darkness.

Even so, his half-brother, Damian, may be a bigger foe, and I have no idea if William even knows he’s coming.

Another trail is ahead, causing me to draw to a stop so quickly my feet slide in the leaves.

I recognize this part of the forest. It’s that creepy path that Irelynn and I hiked before.

With renewed resolve and energy, I push forward, my pace increasing, throwing my arms out for balance as I hurry across the large rocks.

Images from the hike with her float through my mind, and despite it being some time ago, my feet guide the way as though the route is permanently ingrained in my mind and body.

I remember that creepy mansion at the end of the woods, construction workers hard at work, restoring it.

Could she have been so close, practically beneath my nose, this entire time?

My eyes squint in the dim gray gloom of the approaching storm, not able to see as clearly. My heart and pulse pound in my ears, reminding me of a train thundering along on the tracks.

As I reach the end of the forest, a house sits in the distance. Because of the encroaching darkness, the lights beside the walkway flicker on, illuminating the obscurity of the night.

I freeze, the hair standing on the back of my neck as certainty rolls through me.

Ahead of me, perched atop the giant stone pillars, are creepy fucking gargoyle statues, replicas of what I saw that night Darin and I went to William’s apartment.

Found you, motherfucker.

Shrugging my backpack from my shoulders, I squat down, setting it in front of me. Grabbing the zipper, I tug and pull it open, feeling around until I touch the cool steel inside. Wrapping my hand around it, I pull out the gun.

Flicking the safety off, I zipper the pack so it’s closed, then leave it propped against a tree.

Standing, I search the area, then quietly begin heading across the open space, staying away from the lights so I can hide in the cover of darkness.

Once I reach the backside of the house, I press against it, the gun poised as I creep silently toward the window. Peering inside, I squint, looking for any signs of life, but all I see is an empty room.

I continue walking, ducking beneath the window, my ears straining for any noise to alert me to anyone approaching. William likely has cameras outside this house.

Creeping to the side, I’m unable to see anything through the darkened windows on the first floor.

My gaze travels upward to the second floor, light streaming from it.

As I watch, a figure appears in the window. My chest constricts as all the air is sucked from my lungs as I see Irelynn, her face pressing against the glass, her expression wistful as she looks into the darkness.

I take a few steps away from the side of the house, my movement drawing her attention.

She startles, her brown eyes widening and then… her shock causes her mouth to drop open as she presses herself flush against the glass.

My eyes are locked on hers, drinking her in, my features softening as her expression changes to pure elation and joy. A tear flows down her porcelain cheek.

My heart thumps with pure, unadulterated joy as her smile widens, matching mine, her eyes glowing.

“Hi, beautiful,” I mouth to her.

She raises one hand, her fingers fluttering in a wave, as she mouths, “Max.”
