I glared at Chaz. “You told him about that?”

“I wanted to know what he thought,” Chaz said with a shrug.

I shook my head. “Don’t team up on me.”

“We’re not,” Chaz said. “We’re worried about you.”

“Where did you hear she came back to you for the money?” Bas asked.

“She told me,” I said.

Bas narrowed his eyes. “Are you sure it wasn't a misunderstanding? I don't think she planned to do that. Plus, she was honest with you.”

“Yeah?” I asked bitterly. “So was Brooke. She was so fucking honest with me that she didn’t hide the fact that she’d married me just for my money.”

Chaz shook his head and shifted in his chair.

“Look,” he said. “What Brooke did to you was fucked-up. But don’t you think you saw what Emily did in the light of what Brooke did? You’re comparing the two, and that’s not fair to Emily. Or you.”

I glared at Chaz. I was getting pissed off at my brothers for getting involved in my business. What the hell did they know?

But something about what Chaz said made sense. Emily had appeared just after Brooke had caught me off guard in my apartment building, complicating my life as she always did. It had been a stressful situation. There had been a lot of pressure.

And then Emily had said something, and the two had sounded so much the same ...

But were my brothers, right? Had I been unfair to Emily because of Brooke?

“I can’t let anyone use me again,” I said, shaking my head. “I don’t have what it takes to go through it all and have it end in disaster.”

“I get that,” Chaz said. “You’ve been through hell with Brooke. But that doesn’t mean you don’t get to be happy again. And it doesn’t mean everyone is the same. Emily sounds like a good person. She sounds like she made you happy.”

I sighed. “She did. I was happy. But her brother ... It’s too much drama.”

Bas and Chaz glanced at each other again.

“Is she worth it?” Bas asked.

“Worth what?”

“Worth trying again,” Bas said. “Worth risking your heart over.”

I didn’t know what to say. A part of me wanted nothing to do with love again after what had happened with Brooke. But Emily wasn’t the type of woman I could just forget about. I’d chased her away, and until a few moments ago, I’d believed she was just the same as Brooke had been. But I still couldn’t stop thinking about her.

Being without her was an ache I couldn’t fix no matter how much I poured myself into my work.

How could I be this serious about someone when it had been such a short relationship to begin with?

“Can I offer you one piece of advice?” Chaz asked.

“Yeah,” I said. Advice was safe. I could always reject it if I wanted to. It could never hurt.

“Follow your heart.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked. It was the worst advice I’d ever heard. Because I didn’t know how the fuck to do that.

“I know you’re scared of the past. I know you have all these worries about being used. But it’s in your head. What you feel for Emily is what you should listen to. Follow your heart.”

Bas nodded. “He’s right. I mean, Lexi and I nearly didn’t make it because I was too stubborn to admit that she was the one. It has always been her. And I nearly let my pride get in the way.”
