Get used to it,I want to tell her. And if I were any kind of sister, I would tell her that’s what happens when you’re with a multi-billionaire CEO. You never know when they’re coming or going, or getting stuck in some faraway land.

We’re both unsettlingly quiet on the way to the office. Before we walk into the main entrance, she puts a hand on my arm.

“Are we going to be okay?”

I stifle an angry laugh. “I don’t know, to be honest. It’s fucking weird that you’re with my dad. How am I supposed to look at you? As my sister? My dad’s girlfriend? Potential stepmom? I don’t know if you and he have talked about getting married or not, but at a minimum, this will take some getting used to on my part.”

“It’s going to take some getting used to for all of us.”

“Yeah, well, you two have had way more time to absorb it than I have. So I might be a little behind. And I may never catch up.”

Her disappointed gaze pierces me. She looks away. “I wouldn’t saywaymore time. And I hope it doesn’t come to that. I want us to be close.”

Good luck with that, I think.

Greer follows me inside. Sonja at the front desk smiles at us, her gaze drifting back and forth between me and my sister. Things will be crazy when this secret comes out. People judge about this shit and they judge hard.

“How much time do you need?” Greer asks, pausing at the door that leads to the stairs.

“A couple hours maybe.”

“Oh, I’ll take the Porsche home then.”

And there’s another zinger. The Porsche Daddy keeps here to impress his clients. He’d have a fit if I took it out.

A fit.

“Yeah, whatever.” I just blow out a laugh and disappear around the corner, making my way down the long hall to my office that gets used maybe two or three times a year.

Once inside I call Sonja and she answers on the first ring.

“Can you let me know when Greer leaves?”

“You got it, Miss Nilssen.”

“Thank you.”

I hang up the phone and check my cell. Ben has finally replied.

Sorry for the delay. How’d your meeting go?

I’m seriously not in the mood to text which is unusual for me. But this whole morning has been unusual. So I dial his number. When he doesn’t answer I get more perturbed. But then he calls me right back.

“Sorry. I’m trying to finish up this fucking nightmare job.”

“That bad?”

He grits out a sigh. “Yeah, but it’s almost done. So tell me how things went?”

I scroll through my work email as I give him the news. “Well, turns out I have a sister. And her name is Greer.”

“Greer. Your dad’s girlfriend?”

“Yup.”

The line goes quiet. “Christ. That’s a pretty big secret for your dad to keep. Did he know?”

“Yeah, he fucking knew. I’m just … overwhelmed right now. Overwhelmed and pissed.”
