I glance at the clock and see I have four hours before I have to leave for Daddy’s house. Normally, if Devin wasn’t working we’d be hanging out in the living room watching television, or shopping, or planning dinner. Doing ‘coupley’ shit. I need to get out of that whole couple headspace. Those days are over. And this time, I really am done, with both men and women. Screw relationships. Seriously.

I grab my tablet and open my fun, new app, seeing if I can make any more headway with BigDev. I browse a few of the interest groups in the menu bar like art and drawing, gaming, and animals. They’re basically group chats, but I’m just hopping from group to group, hoping he will hit me up for a conversation. When an hour passes without so much as a whisper from his direction, I realize I might have to be the aggressor. With thousands of other kids here I’ll be lost and forgotten if I don’t poke him on the regular.

I navigate to his profile for the first time and right away I notice the green button, showing that he’s online and active now. His picture is so thumbnail I can barely see his face.

Growing impatient, I Google the company address on Frye Road and see that it’s in an office park near the courthouse.

All right. I need to plan this one out. I can just go there and meet the piece of shit myself. All I need to do is pretend to be an investor who just happened to stumble upon his app. Is he interested in selling? No offer is off the table.

I’ll mention that I have kids, invite him to my condo to meet them. Or I can try the seduction angle. See if he wants to meet over cocktails.

Fuck it, I’ll do both. My army green dress that plunges all the way down to my belly button will be perfect. Oh God, the possibilities. I start to get excited at all the ways I can get him alone. One thing’s for certain. I need to go to the YMCA and grab a wig because I cannot show up at his office without some kind of disguise.

The way things are looking, I’ll have him gurgling blood within a week.

Chapter 4

Daddy’s house is nestled in Desert View, a suburb of Phoenix with peaks and valleys and mansions that overlook the North Mountain preserve. He’s still in the home I grew up in, which means it’s haunted with both bitter and sweet memories. As soon as I get there, I can smell dinner cooking. It gives me the homey welcome I desperately need after this shit show of a day.

It’s only been a week since I was here, but I spot the subtle difference right away. In the foyer is a multi-colored vase with freshly cut, long stem roses. I have an inkling they might belong to my father’s new love interest.

“Darling, so good to see you.” Daddy rounds the corner and kisses me on the cheek. He smells like a new brand of aftershave.

“Good to see you too, Daddy.”

“Come on in and meet Greer. She’s putting together some appetizers while we wait on Sandy to finish dinner.”

Sandy has been working for my father for years. I can’t remember the last time he cooked a meal. And it sounds like Greer may not be too strong in the kitchen if Sandy is cooking tonight’s dinner. I pass her in the kitchen prep room and we wave at one another.

“Darling, we have company,” Daddy calls out as we step into the kitchen.

When I see Greer, I’m so stunned it’s hard to hide my reaction. She is absolutely breathtaking. As she arranges some food on a platter, I take her in. She’s wearing a skintight dress that showcases her incredible ass and long legs. Her blond hair is about the same shade as mine, falling down her shoulders in envious waves. She’s got an ample chest and lips that look to be recently plumped out with a lip filler.

Jesus.

When Daddy told me he thought she wasthe one, I expected someone a little older and slightly more sophisticated. Not that Greer doesn’t look like she’s familiar with sophistication. She just looks so damn plastic. Like every other girlfriend he’s had.

“Hello,” she beams. “You must be Tove.” Her stride is confident as she walks my way.

“Nice to meet you, Greer.”

She gives me a soft hug and I smell her perfume. “Your father has told me so much about you. I’m glad we finally get to meet.”

“Me too,” I smile, looking into her blue eyes and wondering if they’re real or contacts.

“Darling,” Daddy says, lifting the tray of food from the granite countertop. Greer and I both look at him. “Get the glasses, would you? We’ll sit in the library and get acquainted.”

“Of course, love.” She spins around and gets three long stems then follows my father down the hall.

Okay, if I have to listen to them call each other “love” and “darling” all night I might barf.

I give myself an internal slap. If Daddy’s happy, I’m happy. Who cares if they have traditional pet names for each other?

Once we’re in the library, which is our family sitting room, Daddy pours the wine and gets settled on the loveseat with his new darling.

“I was sorry to hear about you and Devin. Elaborate on what happened if you like, kitten.” Daddy crosses his legs and Greer pushes a grape inside her mouth, giving him a disapproving look.

“Maybe some other time. It’s still a little raw.” Not completely a lie, but ‘raw’ isn’t quite the word. I gulp down half the glass of wine, letting it heat me up.
