Rigger tosses a look over his shoulder, turns on the pot. “You need to lay low. Maybe permanently.”

I bolt off the bed, jerking a top over my head. “Are you kidding me? Now is not the time to give up. Not when I’m so close.”

“I’ll take care of him for you.”

“Oh no you won’t. I’ve waited too long and worked too hard just to hand this over to someone else.”

Running a harsh hand through his hair, Rigger appears to be irritated with me. Can’t blame him. I know I’m being stupid. I don’t care.

I sit on the edge of the bed, slide my feet into my shoes. I just want to get out of here, move forward with my plans. Moving forward is the only way to live because when you’re standing still, that’s when you’re vulnerable.

“I’m not just someone else, Tove. Don’t lose sight of your end goal, which is to eliminate the man from existence.” Rigger squats on the floor in front of me, puts his hands over my knees. “I can do that without putting you at risk.”

I try not to make eye contact with him but fail. Sometimes, allowing him to be this protective of me hurts. “Do I need to remind you of what that man orchestrated? Of what happened inside my room that night just weeks before my mom was murdered?”

His fingers tighten on my leg. “No. You don’t. I know how much they hurt you, hehurt you. And I understand that hunting him down has been like trying to catch a mad man by the toes. But I want you to consider how many people would be hurt if something were to happen to you.”

“I can think of one.” My daddy is the only person who would be upset if I got hurt. Devin wouldn’t care. She moved on to someone else before she moved away from me.

Rigger draws back. “One. Really?”

“Okay, two if we’re counting you.”

“That’s more like it. Despite you being a giant pain in my ass I genuinely care about you.”

My mouth tugs upward. “Just admit it. You secretly love the fact that I’m a giant pain in the ass.”

“Secret’s out,” he says, barely above a whisper.

“Good boy,” I purr, cupping his beard and kissing him on the forehead. “Now get the fuck out of my way.”

I nudge past him as I stand up and grab my phone.

“I guess you’re still going to the Pier?”

“Of course. I will heed your advice but only partially.” I hold up a finger.

“How partially?”

“I won’t kill Ben. But I’m still going to use him to find out where King is.” I start to make my way to the bathroom so I can grab my lipstick and foundation.

Rigger reaches out and puts his hand over my collarbones, stopping me in place. “And you’ll let me handle the rest?”

I huff out a sigh. I don’t feel like arguing or being lectured. I want to kill King after I have a little fun with him, switching up my M.O. so the cops don’t trace it back to a female.

“Only if you let me help.”

Rigger pulls a face but I leave without giving him the opportunity to change my mind.

And I secretly hate that he always has the power to do that.

Chapter 11

I get to the Pier Café a little before nine o’clock, darting my gaze all over the inside of the restaurant before letting the hostess know I’d like to sit outside.

“I’m also hoping someone will join me.”

“If I see them I’ll send them out here.” She flashes a wink then passes me a menu.
