“Oh …fuck…”

At that moment, everything falls into place.

Snowden gave me Ben’s name because he knew what I was capable of. He wanted me to take him out. How could I have been so naïve to think that he would hand me a name, just like that? Even with a knife pressed to his throat.

“I want a name,” he growls.

I rub my lips, knowing I can’t give him what he wants. What if he goes to the police?

“Give me a fucking name or we’re done here.”

“I’m so sorry, Ben.” I whisper it. Like I can’t even bear to hear my own apology.

“Fuck this.” He tosses a hand up, barges to the door. I don’t want him to leave. But for the life of me, I can’t come up with a single thing that will make him want to stay. My brain is experiencing what feels like an electrical storm.

“Let me help you,” I blurt. It’s the only thing that comes to mind. Maybe because I know that we now have a mutual goal.

However, the way Ben spins around and looks at me, like I’ve lost my damn mind, makes me think twice.

“Let youhelpme?” he asks. “Are you insane?”

“Maybe. I know I want to find him as much as you do. And I’ve got the disguise to do it.” I toss a thumb over my shoulder.

He edges out a laugh. A sad, low laugh that answers my question. “I’ll tell you how you can help. Stay the fuck out of my way.”

After jerking open the door so hard that it bangs against the opposite wall, Ben is gone, taking with him any hatred or animosity I felt.

It’s unfortunate because in the process of realizing we’re on the same team, I’ve alienated myself from him. He won’t forgive me for lying to him, for pretending to be someone I’m not.

What he told me echoes inside my head.

He took my son … raped him … let him drown in the Colorado River …

His pain bleeds into mine once again. In the irony of finding someone I thought was an enemy, I’ve destroyed what could have been an incredible partnership. And side note: I now hate King more than I ever thought possible.

Rubbing my face and trembling from the adrenaline rush, I consider how much simpler my life was when I was dating a girl who was cheating on me.

I fall on the bed, arms stretched above me. My head lolls to the side and I notice my laptop resting on the small table across the room. Weird. I don’t remember leaving it out. And I sure didn’t notice it when Ben and I first got here a few minutes ago. I walk over to it and press the space bar, causing the screen to light up. A task box appears, saying scan complete. I lean down to read it but then the adjoining door clicks. When Rigger appears, I blow out a breath.

“Dude. What the hell.”

“What’s all the commotion. And did you get my message?”

“Things went awry.” I wrinkle my brow.

“I bet. Check your phone.” He’s standing there, arms crossed. I get my phone from my bag and read his message. The one he sent right after the three dots. The one I never got.

I’m getting something from the car. Check your bathroom when you get there. I think you left some things out.

“Oh, thanks,” I grumble. “This is super helpful.”

“I don’t think I need to ask if that’s what went awry.”

“You don’t. And were you in my room while I was gone?”

His eyes shift to my laptop then back to me. “Yeah. I went outside right before you came up.”

“What were you doing?”
