It takes a few moments to process what he’s saying. I don’t know if I’m misinterpreting him or if I’m being paranoid. But I know he’ll smell my fear if I fail to hide it.

“Am I really supposed to be able to trust you if you have cop friends?”

His gaze pierces me. “I didn’t say they were friends. I said they were connections. They provide me with facts. That’s pretty much all cops are good for. Taking down information. They don’t solve crimes or prevent them. They’re gun-toting paper pushers.”

I lean back. “Wow. Tell me how you really feel.”

“Just speaking from the heart, babe.”

“Okay. Well, let me see if I can speak from the heart.Babe.” I release a long breath. Ben cups my face, seemingly admiring me in the way he brushes his thumb across my chin. “I may know something about those men who’ve dropped like swatted flies as you said.”

He pulls me close, his lips hovering right in front of mine. I feel his erection twitch, sending endorphins coursing through my veins. “Did you do it, Tove? Did you kill those men?”

I hesitate for only a second before whispering my answer. It slides off my tongue like only a confession while sitting naked in a man’s lap can: soft and slippery.

“Yes.”

I’m not surprised when the groan comes up his throat. And I’m not surprised when his tongue is inside my mouth again.

Okay. I’m a little surprised. But pleasantly surprised.

Very pleasantly.

My pulse hammers in my neck. And damn. I don’t know how he does it but he stands completely upright with my legs still wrapped around him.

He tosses me on the couch and rips his jeans loose, kicking them aside impatiently. Dropping to his knees next to me, he begins fumbling through the drawer of the coffee table, seconds later pulling out a condom.

“Do you just keep those things stashed all over the house?” I ask, running a finger along the underside of his shaft.

“Yes. In every room. Would you like to do the honors?” He passes me the square package and I hold it, stunned.

“Um, I’ve never—”

“I’ll show you.”

I slide to the floor, on my knees like him, and tear open the package, pinching the rolled-up latex and sliding it out. It’s slick as I press it to the head but it doesn’t budge.

“It’s backwards. Here.” He flips it, then puts his hand over mine, demonstrating how it’s done.

“Sorry. Obviously I know nothing about this.”

“Don’t apologize,” he grits out, fisting my hair and pulling my face close to his. “Not about this. Not about anything you just said to me.”

His hand pushes mine down, forcing the condom to the root of his length. He kisses me, hitches me back on the couch, and enters me with precision.

I wrap my legs around his waist and toss my arms over my head, and I let him take me until I’m breathless and spent and my body and thoughts have completely flatlined.

Chapter 17

The next morning a heavy fog wafts through my mind before I fully awaken. I open my eyes and don’t recognize the space. It’s still dark and there are navy blue curtains in the window.

And a warm body breathing next to me.

Oh yeah.

Contented, I roll over, toss an arm over Ben’s stomach, causing him to stir. I lean over and quietly kiss him on the cheek then start to get up, but he grips my wrist and pops one eye open.

“Where do you think you’re going?”
