“I don’t think that is any of your business.”

“You better change that way of thinking, dick.”

He held the phone out, looked at it, and then brought it back to his ear. This was not like the sweet Amanda he knew. This was a ball-busting woman bent on making him hurt.

Then, he heard a male voice. “Give me the phone, babe. I’ll take care of it.”

“Okay, but if not, I’ll be sending my brothers to tear him a new asshole.”

He was too stunned to say anything. In the next instant, Mal Dupree was on the phone. “Hey, Vic, sorry about that. But we can’t find Addy.”

“I was just about to go over there.”

“She was supposed to be on a plane headed this way about an hour ago and missed it.”

Something cold sunk into his blood. “Missed it? Did Amanda try to call her?”

“Yep, and no answer. Not like her at all. Usually, she would text, thinking we would be asleep over here, but Amanda has been up and waiting. When she called Addy, it kept going to voicemail. I have to say, I’m worried because that’s not like Addy at all. She’s always good about checking in. Both women are. We didn’t want to call her father and worry him, and if you couldn’t tell, Amanda is ready to give you hell.”

“Of course she is.” He deserved. He let the woman he loved become a target, then left her unprotected. If anything happened to her, it would be his fault.

“I’ll head over there and check things out. I still have a key,” he said.

“Good, and please call. Pregnancy hormones are making Amanda really mean.”

“I heard that,” Amanda said in the background.

“Will do,” Vic said.

He hung up and grabbed a pair of shoes when his phone went off. He didn’t even check the number, just assumed it was Amanda again.

“You picked up on the first ring. How gallant of you,” Peter Bartlett said.

“What do you want?”

“I want to know how much this cute little thing is worth to you.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“Addison Mahler. You should have gotten a picture right before this call.”

He pulled the phone back, looked at it, and realized he had. Addy's eyes closed, and she had blood on her head.

Everything in him turned to ice. “How do I even know she’s okay?”

“Say something for the bastard of a boyfriend.”

“I keep telling you he’s not my boyfriend.”

The moment he heard her voice, he closed his eyes and let loose a breath that he didn’t know he had been holding. Relief coursed through him

“So, you see, she’s alive and mouthy. I’m going to give you directions to where to meet me. I want you alone. No police, and if you call that influential father of hers, I will kill her right in front of you.”

“Where?”

“I’ll text the directions to you. You have an hour.”

Then the phone went dead.
