“This doesn’t mean I forgive or want anything to do with you.”

He chuckles. “Yeah. I know.”

“Call my dad,” she ordered as the edges of her vision seemed to dissolve. “And text Amanda.”

She didn’t hear his response as her world went completely dark again.

ChapterFourteen

Vic hated hospitals almost as much as he hated Bartlett. Since they arrived, the hospital staff had been trying to kick him out of Addison’s room in the ER, but he had refused to budge.

“Mr. Chambers, it’s just not…well, you aren’t family,” the sweet nurse said. She was about twenty years older than him, with a kind face and a head full of dark curls. Still, no matter how often she told him to leave, he would not do it. He even rode in the ambulance with her.

“I mean, if you were married or engaged—”

“We are engaged.”

She studied him for a long moment. “You could have said something earlier.”

He sighed. “I just wasn’t thinking straight. After everything that happened.”

Her eyes softened, and he should feel guilty, but he didn’t. “Of course. Then, that changes everything.”

“Thanks.”

“They are going to be back here for an MRI. We need to see about her concussion.”

He nodded.

“You can’t go with her.”

It irritated him, but he nodded again. Rationally, he knew that he couldn’t go, but he was anything but rational at that moment.

She left them alone, and Vic sat back down, taking Addison’s hand. Just thinking about what could have happened to her had him closing his eyes and resting his forehead on their joined hands.

“We are not engaged.”

Just hearing her voice sent joy cascading through him. He lifted his head and noticed the frown turning her lips down. She had a split lip, a knot on her forehead, and was paler than he was used to, but she was the most beautiful woman in the world. Nothing would ever change that.

“You don’t remember because you were hit on the head.”

She didn’t smile. She didn’t even snort-laugh. “I remember you telling me you were done with me.”

He heard the pain in her voice, dripping off each syllable. It pierced his heart.

“I was trying to keep you safe.”

“More like you’re trying to keep yourself safe.”

The woman always busted his balls. He opened his mouth to say something, but the door opened, and her father rushed in.

“Addy,” he said, hurrying over to her side. She opened her eyes for him.

“Hey, Dad.”

“What is going on?” Frederick demanded. His voice was stronger now.

Before Vic could answer, the orderlies arrived with the nurse to take Addison to get her MRI. Once they were alone in the room, Frederick looked at him.
