“And no fireworks. The Fourth of July is no Independence Day for us.”

I let that one lie. Since we were kids, her telling of Queen Leilikelani’s imprisonment and the subsequent annexing of Hawaii, didn’t allow for fun and fireworks. Tonight we celebrate as if it is any other day.

“It’s just a party. It’ll be fun. They are going to have delicious food and we will just sit around and talk story. You used to love that. There’s going to be music and singing. How long has it been since you went to a party? I know you are going to enjoy yourself. You are the guest star remember.”

Her head whips around and the voice sharpens.

“I don’t want to be the guest star! What do you mean? Did someone say that?”

“I did. No one else, Mom. I’m just saying wherever you go people are happy to have you. You can’t run from your reputation with the people. It is an honor.”

“No one better ask me to dance. I’ll get the hell out if they do. Let me just sit quietly with a plate and talk to the old people.”

“Want me to put a bag over your head?”

“Maybe.”

“Lord.”

“At least you and Leilani will be watching for my signal. If I pull on my ear, I want to leave. Or I might just say it out loud if you ignore me.”

“Got it.”

The final turn onto Paula and Keanu’s property leads back to the house. Before we get there the lights appear. In the trees and across the road, palm to palm. Music gets louder and clearer as we approach.

What a charming place. A wide one story with a wraparound porch sits in the middle of an open space. Flowering bushes and a well-tended garden greet the guests which are already many.

“Oh, there’s too many people here!”

“Mom! Stop it. It’s a party for Christ’s sake. You’re alright!”

A young guy motions where to park and I bring the windows down.

“I’m going to drop my mother off at the house. I’ll come back and park.”

He nods, waves us forward and walks away.

“I’m going to text Leilani. She’ll come out and be with you till I get back.”

“Alright.”

I get to it and she responds immediately.

Pulling in front of the house, I watch my girl walking out and down the stairs. There’s a big smile on her face as she spots us. Holy shit. She looks like an angel. A sexy one that probably got kicked out of heaven for making Archangel Michael have impure thoughts. She wears some kind of short, white, sleeveless romper thing that hugs in all the right places. A soft ruffle surrounds the deep neckline and tickles her tits. At least that’s what I am imagining. I bet she made it because what off the rack item could fit like that? It’s cool as fuck. The big dangling earrings I see through her wavy hair brush golden shoulders. I want to preserve the image forever.

As she reaches the car, my mother opens the door. Leilani bends down.

“Greetings, partygoers!”

“If I tug on my ear, I want you to get Alekenekelo.”

“Sure, Auntie. Let me help you.”

She places her cane on the ground.

“I don’t need help. Back up.”

This has all the makings of a disaster. Come on, Mom. Work with me. Luckily, Leilani does not take offense.
