“We could put flyers in assisted living or retirement homes. Somebody might bite just to get rid of the thing because of the registration and license fees. We aren’t picky.”

“I guess it’s worth a try.”

Out of left field flies an idea, that hits me square between the eyes.

“Ohhhh!”

“What?”

“Aunt Marie!”

“What about her?”

“She’s leaving for Australia in a few weeks. And her perfectly maintained Kia will be sitting in the garage.”

Now I have his attention.

“How long is she going to be gone?”

“One fucking month!!!”

“One fucking month would buy us time. Think she’d do it though?”

“Are you kidding? She’s the one person who would. She loves us, brother. Oh, I am so excited!”

Pulling over to the curb, I kick him out.

“You have to walk from here. I’m late for lunch with Alek and his mother. Have your key?”

He gives me a look.

“I’m thirty-eight. Yes I remembered to bring my key. And I promise not to use the stove until you get home.”

“Smart ass. Get out.”

“When are you going to call Aunt Marie?”

“Oh no. I’m not calling. You’re a man. Grab your balls and do your own asking.”

“Shit. Okay. You’re right.”

“And do it today, brother.”

“I will.”

The door shuts, and I pull away. Okay, I feel pretty good about our chances. Checking my image in the mirror, I smooth down an errant curl and reach for my travel size perfume. One spritz. Up ahead a half block over is the restaurant we are meeting at. Wonder how Nani did at the orthopedic doctor?

I pull into the small parking lot and take the last open space. They’re here. Good. Is that Lani walking across the lot? I honk and wave. He waits as I exit the car.

“Hi!”

“Hello, little girl.”

“I thought you might have gone with her.”

He holds open the door.

“I wanted to, but she is a stubborn woman. Wants to do everything on her own.”
