“It’s all good.”

He turns to me. “I spoke to the surgeon. Everything went well. She just went into recovery, so you have an hour or so until she’s back in her room. But don’t hold me to the timeline. It might take longer.”

“Oh thank God,” Lani says, wiping an escaping tear with the back of his hand.

“Great,” I say. “Are they going to get her up walking today? That’s what she said they told her.”

“Oh yeah. She’ll be going home tomorrow, probably. Did you arrange for the physical therapist?”

“It’s all set up. Any other tips, or things I should be watching for?”

“They’ll give you a print out of instructions to follow. It’s pretty straightforward. Just make sure she takes the pain medication as directed. Get ahead of it the first few days, because if she waits till the pain is a nine out of ten, it’s not as effective.”

“I had a knee replacement a few years back. So I’ll be sure to watch for signs of infection or fever,” Lani adds.

“I saw the scar. Yeah, good thinking.”

He is happy his contribution isn’t dismissed. Noa makes eye contact with me.

“Can we talk privately for a minute?”

Lani takes the hint and heads for the door.

“I’ll be in the gift shop. You two stay here.”

“Thanks.”

As soon as he leaves, Noa takes a seat and stretches his legs. I join him.

“So tell me about the hula girl. She’s going to be helping care for Mom?”

Makes perfect sense he’s asking about the woman.

“How do you know?”

“Our little brother has all the news. Gives me the headlines when I want to know what the family is up to. Otherwise I’d have to dig for it.”

“So yeah, Leilani is going to be there during the day. She and Alana will spot each other while I’m at the restaurant.”

“How’d you get our mother to agree to that?”

“They like each other. And prepare yourself brother, Nani Medina is a new woman.”

“How so?”

“She no longer is pissed at the world. When she got a boyfriend she stopped being old.”

“Sex is healing.”

“You should know. The woman she was when we were kids reappeared.”

He gives me a look of doubt. “You’re exaggerating. I’ve only been gone for six weeks.”

“A lot can happen to a person in that amount of time.”

He holds my gaze and the unspoken message is received.

“I’ll be by tomorrow night to see for myself. I want to meet this girl.”
